In the story, “The Duchess and the Jeweller”, Virginia Wolf portrays a very pathetic, picture of the 20th century English, society. Both the characters represent the decline of the moral values in the society. Oliver Bacon was the richest and famous jeweller  of England. He once sold the stolen dogs and the fake  pearls. Duchess was cleverer than the jeweller. She lacks  in moral values. She wanted to sell the fake pearl to the jeweller. She trapped the jeweller by using the name of her daughter. Duchess invited Oliver Bacon to her house  at the weekend where Diana would also be present She  used her beautiful daughter to cheat the jeweller. This  shows that Duchess was more loathsome than the  jeweller.</span><br /><span style="mso-tab-count: 1;"><br /></span></p>
