 Discuss the difference between host and the guest. </h2>
Bearbohm in his essay, “Hosts and Guests” expresses his views about hosts and guests. 
He
 says that mankind may be divided into two classes i.e., host and guest.
 According to him, in every human being, one of the two instincts 
dominates. Those who have the negative or passive instinct to accept it 
are the guests. There are many guests as there are hosts. 
The 
writer says that our deepest instincts, bad or good are those which we 
share with the rest of the animate creation. The difference between host
 and guest is based on circumstances or temperament. When a man asks the
 other to dine with him in a restaurant and the other agrees, one 
pays-for the food and the other enjoys it, they are host and the guest 
according to their role. 
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
 Bearbohm thinks that mankind can be divided generally into
two categories: hosts and guests. The difference  between the two is not
only circumstantial and particular but also temperamental and general. Every human
being has either the positive and active instinct of being a host or the
negative and passive instinct of being a guest. Hosts are those who have the
natural instinct to serve others and guests are those who to be served. </div>

The quality
of hospitality is exclusively a human quality.It  has developed slowly with
the development of the civilization. The cavemen did not entertain others
because they were afraid of being killed by the hosts . The quality
of hospitality developed slowly as human beings were organized into groups and
the history of hospitality is full of painful incidents, the writer tells us
that though the Israelites were considered to be the salt of the world, yet the
treachery of the Jael was condemnable. </div>

The
 Greeks cultured but Odysseus killed his guests under his own room and 
the Romans were at the peak of civilization in the 15th  century.
Borgias concealed poison in their cellars for their guests. But the 
Scotch s’
hospitality is proverbial. It was Scotland that first formed hospitality
 with
the basic principal that the guest must be honored .
 </div>

The
 writer says that it is conventional for
the rich to give and for the poor to take as a result of which the rich 
usually
become hosts and the poor  become the guests. But this cannot be
regarded as a rule because neither all the poor are guests nor all the 
rich are
a the hosts. Most of the time i\It is simply the matter of one’s’ 
temperament. A host as a  guest is far worse than the guest as a host.  
like other boys he himself was a guest by nature but he often
entertained his friends at the restau rant and was always afraid of the shortage
of the money in his pocket. He feels that the guests must be obliged to
their hosts but many times it is not so. Many guests  are often ungrateful
to their hosts. In every human being one or 
the other of these two instincts is predominant: the active or positive 
instinct to offer hospitality, the negative or passive instinct to 
accept it. And either of these instincts is so significant of character 
that one might well say Kina is divisible into two great classes: hosts 
and guests.

Man dies when he loses hope”. It is the hope that keeps us alive. For
 eighty-four days, old man had not caught any fish. A young man, Monolin
 had shared his bad fortune but after the fortieth luckless day, the 
boy’s father told his son to go in another boat. From that day, Santiago
 worked alone. Each morning he rowed his skiff into the Gulf stream 
where the big fish were. Each evening he came empty-handed. 
The 
boy loved the old man and pitied him. Manolin had no money of his own. 
Santiago had enough fresh bait for his lines. The old man accepted his 
kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride. At night 
alone in his shack, Santiago dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa 
where he had gone on a sailing ship years before. He no longer dreamed 
of his dead wife. 
On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago rowed out of 
the harbour in the cool dark before dawn. After leaving the land behind 
him, he set his lines. Two of his baits were fresh tunas the boy had 
given him, as well as sardines to cover his hooks. The lines went 
straight into deep dark water. As the sun rose, he saw other boats in 
towards shore, which was only a low green line on the sea. 
A 
hovering man of war showed him where dolphins were chasing some flying 
fish, but his shoal was moving too fast and too fast away. The bird 
circled again. This time Santiago saw tuna leaping in the sunlight. A 
small one took the hook on his stem line. Hauling the quivering fish 
aboard, the old man thought it a good omen. 
Toward noon, a marlin
 started nibbling at the bait which was one hundred fathom down. The 
fish did not surface instead, it began to tow the skiff to the 
northwest. Although he was alone and no longer strong, he Had his skill 
and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to tire. The old 
man shivered in the cold that came after sunset. When something took one
 of his remaining baits, he cut the line with his sheath knife. 
Once
 the fish lurched suddenly, pulling Santiago forward on his face and 
cutting his cheek. By dawn, his left hand was stiff and cramped. The 
fish headed northward there was no land in sight Another strong tug on 
the line sliced Santiago's right hand. Hungry, he cut strips from the 
tuna and chewed them slowly while he waited for the sun to warm him and 
ease his cramped fingers. That morning the fish jumped. 
On seeing 
it leap, Santiago knew he had hooked the biggest marlin he had ever 
seen. Then the fish went under and turned toward the east Santiago 
dragged sparingly from his water bottle during the hot afternoon. 
In
 spite of all hardships, the old man never loses hs hope and continued 
his struggle to achieve his goat We can say that novel is full of hope 
elements. As Santiago says, "1 will try it as tong as I have the oars 
and the short dub and the tiler". On
 another occasion, when the martin coukl pun the skiff downward into the
 water, the old man was very careful and says."We are joined together 
and have been since noon And no one to help. And no one to help either 
of us I wish I could see him to know what I have against me.

Earnest Hemingway has depicted the sea as a living character in the 
novel. The Old Man and The Sea. He has attributed many characteristics 
of a man to the sea which prove it to be a living character in the 
novel.  
The old man always thinks of the sea as feminine because in 
Spanish poetry the sea is treated as a woman. People call her La mar 
means feminine in Spanish when they love her. Santiago thinks that some 
of the younger fishermen call the sea as el mar which is masculine.  
They
 speak her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. So different 
people call her by different names but as living character.The sea also 
plays a role of a teacher in the novel. 
It teaches the fishermen 
how to lead their lives and earn their livelihood. 
 It teaches the old 
man how to ask help from God at the hard time of life. It proves to be a
 moral teacher for the old man. The old man loved the sea because it 
housed his friends and enemies. The sea is as colourful and beautiful as
 land for him. The man thinks it to be his home. He says that one is 
never alone at the sea because the living creatures provide company. 
The
 sea is also a source of livelihood for the fishermen and to every 
fisherman, it gives his share of fish to feed and live on. It supplies 
livelihood to fishermen as a benevolent father. Fishing is a trade or 
industry which depends on the sea. Santiago and other fishermen living 
in Havana depend on the sea for their livelihood. So we can say that the
 sea is a living character.

The facts “
 in this part make the humour pensive. In the first part of essay, I we 
have formed the impression that the tailor was very formal, he was 
peaceful and happy, his business was going on well. But in the later 
part of the essay, all these impressions are shed off. We learn about 
the sad and sudden death of the tailor. ' Everything was as 
usual but he was not there. So far we have  been viewing him as a 
machine. Now we feel sympathy when we leam that he was a man. He was 
always still and tranquil, now we leam that worry of his business killed
 him. He had a wife and a daughter who were left badly off. The writer 
never conceived him as having a wife. He knew music and played the 
flute. He was also a sidesman of a church. The writer had no 
conversation with him on religion. It was hard to connect him with the 
idea of religion. We feel sonry at our first impression of such a man. 
The writer also seems to laugh through his tear.

Ans: </h2>
Alpha of the Plough remarks in his essay ‘On Saying Please' that bad 
manners are infectious so also are the good manners. It is a sensible 
comment by the writer on social manners. An ill-humoured person spreads 
anger and irritation in society. If we encounter incivility in life then
 most of us become uncivil.  
The writer points out that bad manners are 
very harmful to society. They do more to poison the stream of general 
life than all the crimes in the history.  
Bad manners cause a lot of 
injury to our sense of self-respect. Injury to our body soon passes away
 but an injury to our feelings may poison our life. 
If
 the officer insults his subordinate, the subordinate insults his peon. 
The peon will be angry with his wife. His wife will be angry with his 
cook. In this way, bad manners are sure to poison the atmosphere. 
The
 writer believes that good manners are also infectious. If we are polite
 and civil to others then he will be polite and civil to others. In this
 connection, we take an example of a conductor. The behaviour of the bus
 conductor impressed him greatly. 
 One day the writer was travelling in 
the bus when conductor approached him for a ticket. The writer did not 
have the purse with him. He was worried and upset at the
 situation. 
 The conductor was a kind and cheerful person. He gave the 
ticket to the writer without money. His cheerfulness impressed the 
passengers and they too, were demanded to behave properly with others.

These lines have been taken from the poem 'Say This City Has Ten Million Souls' by W.H. Auden. 
Context: 
The poet describes the feelings of German refugees in the new country and the attitude of the people towards them. 
Explanation: 
The refugees come to a very huge modem city whose population is ten million. The city people lead a mechanical kind of life. Some live in large and grand buildings while many live in small, dirty houses. 
“Souls" here mean people who are without bodily feelings, sympathy and desires. The life of the very rich living in mansions and that of the common people living in dirty houses are equally dull, boring and useless. So, these two classes are equally unwelcoming in their attitude towards the people coming from another country as refugees. 
(b) What is this life if full of care, We have no time to stand and stare? 
No time to stand beneath the boughs 
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

he poet is feeling sorry for the busy life of modem man who has no time to relax and enjoy the beauties of nature. 
 Explanation: 
In these lines, the poet is lamenting on the busy life of modem man who has no time to enjoy the beauty of nature. 
He says we have no time to stand under the trees and see the beauty of nature. We are not better than sheep or cows who look at the beauty of nature all around them while grazing in the meadow. We are so much busy in the material pursuits that we forget everything including the beauty of nature which has been created by God for us. He feels sorry for this attitude towards nature.

These lines have been taken from the poem 'Kubla Khan’ by S.T. Coleridge. 
Context: 
The poet described his dreams in which he saw the surroundings of Kubla Khan's palace constructed to his order in Xanadu. There a holy river flowed through deep caves into an underground sea. There were miles of fertile ground around the castle. Kubla Khan heard the voices of his forefathers. 
Explanation: 
The poet says that he saw an Abyssinian maid in a dream. She was playing upon a dulcimer, a musical instrument and singing a song about Mount Abora - an imaginary mountain. In the delight of the hearing of the music and song, he imagined all the things of Kubla Kahn's grand castle. 
(d) The sun is behind me. Nothing has changed since i began, My eye has permitted no change.

Context: 
In this dramatic monologue, the poet has highlighted the arrogant and despotic rulers. Here hawk stands for such rulers. Like the despotic rulers, hawk, the king of rulers is also power intoxicant due to his physical power and domination over other birds. 
Explanation: 
The hawk, who stands for the power drunk or despotic rulers says that the sun is at his back. Therefore, he gets all the solar energy. Thus he possesses all the powers. This is why no change has taken place since he began his life as an absolute ruler of all other birds. His eye has not allowed any change in the world of birds. He will continue to keep things in 
the same manner. 
(e) On this occasion she's an enterprising young lady who puts on her best frock and calls on me to try to get her brother the Job of advertising my taxi-cabs.

These lines have been taken from the one act play “Smoke-screen" by Harold Brighouse. 
Context: 
This play tells about the life of a woman Lucy who has been separated from her husband and raising her daughter Primrose who is a young girl now. Lucy married a man who was charming but he was not faithful to Lucy and had bad character. Primrose wants to marry a man George, who is black. Lucy and her sister are concerned about the liberal life of Primrose. 
Explanation: 
In these lines, Clarice, the friend of Primrose and Lucy the mother of Primrose are talking. Primrose wants to marry the brother of Clarice who is negro. Lucy is not happy on it. She is alleging Clarice that her brother has sent him for his business benefits because Lucy is running a taxi company and George is running an advertising agency. Lucy does not want her daughter marry a black man.

                           School activities and memories</h2>
School
 days are the halcyon days of every one’s life. Once gone, they never 
come back. As one grows old one loves to remember them in his/her 
leisure. The most memorable activities are fun and play activities done 
with classmates. 
I also remember activities such as games period 
fun, hanging around the canteen during the break, excursion, picnics, 
inter house activities and contests, annual day preparations and 
performances, exhibitions, etc. I think I will never lose their magic 
until the end of life. The unpleasant memories related to academics also
 chase me for a long time. Low grades in the terminal exams and tests, 
parent teacher meeting days, punishment days, etc. all haunt my mind. I 
should cherish school memories. 
The school days were the golden 
days of my life. I used to never the miss school. I loved to study all 
the subjects But Math was my favourite. I took part in all the 
competitions and won many trophies. 
The greatest memory is the 
day when I won a gold medal for my school at National level in 900 m 
race. My Principal and  teacher were very proud to introduce me as their
 student. 
I am an truthful and successful person in my life. And 
it is all due to the efforts of my teachers. My respect for them can
