One of them hoped that a lot in India would change as a result. <br />Mangu’s joy knew no bounds when he heard that. According to the writer, “Ustad Mangu was already in seventh heaven” because of his thinking that the new constitution would give him equal, human rights which he was denied then. He considered the news so great that he wanted to tell it as soon as possible to all his friends and companions. When Nathoo came in, he cut a joke on him: “I have great news for you. It’s so good that it might make your hair grow back.” He thought that the “new constitution  was going to force these white mice once for all back into their miserable holes.” <br />He had a bending towards the left. So he thought that the Russian King (according to him, every country was by rule governed by a king!) must have forced the goras to enforce the new constitution and give equal rights to all the Indians. So he was,excited! <br />One day, he had two barristers at the back of his tonga. They were talking loudly about the same new <br />constitution. They were talking mostly in English, so Ustad Mangu was unable to follow it. But he drew out a result that the two barristers were "todies” as they did not seem to like the new constitution. <br />Three days later, Ustad Mangu picked up three students of Govt. College who were going to Mozang. They were also talking about the new constitution and hoped that it would give them some benefits. <br />In the light of all this information, Ustad Mangu hoped feverishly and excitedly that the lot of the common Indian would change with the enforcement of the new constitution. But all his high hopes were scattered when he was arrested and put behind the bars for beating a gora soldier who had insulted and abused him. His expectations did not come true and he was mercilessly told: "What rubbish . are you talking? What new constitution? It’s the same old constitution, you fool.” I Due to illiteracy, he thinks with his own ideas. So, although he has innocent views but it seems as foolery?</span>

He did not show any emotional response to the news. He was so fed up with his race with the killers that now he had resigned himself to his fate. He had struggled hard to save life. But now he felt that there was no use' escaping death. He was ready to face death at any time. Once the writer was reading a patent liver-pill advertisement. In this advertisement there were given various symptoms of the disease. He felt all these symptoms in  himself. he reaches the conclusion that he is suffering from that particular disease.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> The writer went to the British Library to find out the treatment of his minor ailment. He went to the British Library, took out a book and started reading about that disease. He turned many pages of the book and read about different diseases and their symptoms</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">. After reading that book he came to know that he was suffering from all the diseases whose names started with 'A'. He trembled with horror. After studying about different diseases, the writer decided to examine himself. He felt his pulse. It was 147 to a minute. He tried to feel his heart. He could not find his heart at all. He shut one eye and tried to examine it with the other </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The writer thought that he would be a great source of research for the medical science. They would not have to go from bed to bed to know about different diseases. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">After this he went straight to his doctor who was his old friend. He told him the whole story and asked for a medical check-up. The doctor was a sensible man. He looked at the writer and wrote out a prescription. The writer thought that by going to the doctor he was doing a good turn to him. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">A doctor needs good practice. He has to examine hundreds of patients who have one or two diseases to get a good practice. But to examine a patient like him who had a number of diseases was likely to get practice of seventeen hundreds ordinary patients. prescription given to him In fact, the author did not have any disease. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">That is why the doctor could not give him any prescription. He gave him some pieces of advice. He advised him to take proper diet and exercise and not to stuff his mind with unreasonable things. The doctor's prescription was about proper diet and exercise. The author went to a chemist. Without reading the prescription the chemist handed back it to him and said that he did not keep it. On asking he said that he did not have any resturaht and co-operative store to provide required things to him. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">The prescription contained the following advice:</span></span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-size: large;">1. The conquest of Spain by the Umayyads makes a remarkable and almost unbelievable story. In 750, the Umayyad dynasty was overthrown in Damascus. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">A grandson of the tenth caliph of Damascus, Abd-ul-Rahman, a distinguished young man of twenty, had dramatic escape from the hands of the Abbasides. One day when he was camping on the left bank of river Euphrates, Abbaside soldiers found him. The younger brother returned and was killed. Abd-ul-Rehman swan to the opposite bank. Friendless and penniless, he set out on foot. After great hardships he reached Palestine. He stayed there with a friend for some time. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Then he set off once again towards , the West. He - succeeded In reaching North Africa where he barely escaped being killed by a government officer. He wandered from tribe to tribe while abbaslde's spies pursued him. After five years he reached the tribe of his maternal uncles. They gave him refuge. In the south of Spain, there were stationed some Syrian troops from Damascus. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He made his way to them and they accepted him as their leader. One city after another opened its gates to him. In a few years all Spain came under his control. The Abbaslde Caliph in Baghdad sent a new governor to Spain. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Abdul Rahman caught hold of him and beheaded him. He sent his head to the Caliph in Baghdad. Abd-ul-Rheman had a weil disciplined army of 40,000 c’ more Berbers. He was a man of great qualities. He developed arts and culture. He beautified h|s cities. He ordered the construction of a vail round the capital, and erected for himself a palace and a garden outside Cordoba, bui|t In 788. Abd-ul-Rehman made Islamic Spain a center of world culture. His court was one of the most glorious in all Europe. It received envoys from Germany, Italy and France. Commerce and agriculture flourished. The sources of income for the State were  multiplied. In this way Abd-ul-Rehman established himself as the supreme ruler of Spain.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> </span><span style="font-size: large;">Abd-ul-Rehman 111</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Rehman III came to power In 912. By that time empire founded by Abd-ul-Rehman had turned Into small states by tribal wars. The "Amir" had control over only the capital4 and its surroundings. Abd-ul-Rehrten III was a young man when he took office. Like his famous grandfather, he was a man of Intelligence and determination.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He began consolidating the empire with resolution. One by one, he reconquerred the lost provinces and restored law and order. He ruled with remarkable ability and wisdom for fifty years. His predecessors, although supreme rulers of Spain, had called themselves ’Amlres’ and not 'Caliphs’. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He proclaimed himself caliph, thus breaking all ties with the caliphate In Baghdad. Abd-al-Rehman’s reign marks the height of Muslim rule in West. His capital, Cordoba, became famous throughout the world as the most cultured city In Europe, and one of the three cultural centres of the world. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The other two were Baghdad and Constantinople. It consisted of one hundred and thirteen thousand homes and twenty suburbs. It had seventy libraries, numerous mosques and bookshops. It had miles of paved streets lighted from the bordering houses. Great cities of Europe like londoh and Paris were much inferior to Cordoba. It was seven hundred years later that London and Paris began paving and lighting their streets. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">4Whenever a European .ruler needed a surgeon, an architect or a dress maker, he applied to Cordoba. It was undoubtedly. The Jewel of The World" as a German nun called It. Muslim Spain in the 10th century was one of the richest and most thickly populated countries of Europe.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> All arts and crafts flourished in the land. The art of tanningand embossing leather was at its very height. From Spain it was carried to Morocco and later to England and France. Wool and silk fabrics were manufactured in many parts of Spain. Raising of silk worms was Introduced into Spain by Muslims. Glassware and brasswork were produced In Almeria. Paterna was famous for its pottery . There were numerous mines in the country which produced gold, silver, iron, lead and precious stones.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Muslims Introduced better methods of agriculture Into Spain. Wheat and other grains as well as olives and other fruits were grown by farmers. ; The government had a regular postal Service and minted its own coins . </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Arab coins were in use In many parts of Europe which had no coinage of their own. The real glory of this period lies in the development of knowledge and arts. Abd-al-Rehman’s successor, Al-Hakani started where Abd-al-Rehman had left off. Al-Hakam was a great scholar and he patronized learning. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He founded the university of Cordoba, the first of great Muslim universities. Students from all parts of Europe came to the University. The caliph also founded a library containing 400,000 books collected from all parts of the civilized world. In Muslim Spain under Abd-al-Rehman III and AI-Hakam nearly everyone could read and write, it was at a time when only a few churchmen In Europe had knowledge and learning. </span></div>

Then came his best book "Three men in boat" The book,was published in 1889, became an instant success . </span></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;">The book sold world wide. It has been adapted inmovies ,radio programs.Its writing style influenced every one. He married with Georgina Elizabeth Henrietta Stanley .She had a daughter from her previous, five-year marriage .</span></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Jerome volunteered to serve his country at the outbreak of the war, but, being 56 years old, was rejected by the British Army. In june 1927 on a motoring tour from Devon to London he suffered a paralytic attack.</span></div> <div style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;">He died on 14 june 1927. He is buried at St.marry's church.In 1984 a small museum was opened to dedicate his life and work. </span></div> <h3 style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;">How auther cosidered himself a hospital</span></h3> <span style="font-size: large;">One day, the author happened to read a leaflet advertising a patent medicine for liver disorders. He suddenly realized that ha had the same symptoms as in the leaflet. He concluded that his liver was out  of order. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">This made him read more patent medicine advertisements. And whenever he read an advertisement, he thought that he was suffering from that particular disease. Once he went to the British Museum to read up the treatment of some minor disease he felt he was suffering from. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He took a dictionary of diseases and read what he had come to read. Then he turned the pages and began to study other diseases. It did not take him long to realize that he was suffering from typhoid fever and St. Virus disease. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Now he decided to diagnose his maladies systematically. So he started reading the dictionary from the letter . In a short time he had found that he had Bright’s disease, Cholera, Diphtheria and almost all other diseases detailed in the book. The only exception was the Housemaid’s Knee.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> At first he felt rather unhappy about it. Why had he not got this little malady when he had every other disease known to the medical science? Then he reconciled himself to the situation and decided to do without it. the last entry in the dictionary was zymosis and it gave him great satisfaction to find that he had been suffering from It from boyhood without knowing it.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Now he sat down in a comfortable chair and pondered, He was a hospital in himself, - What a great help he would be to medical students. They could examine him and acquire full knowledge of all, the diseases. No need to go to hospitals and walk from ward to ward and patient to patient. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Soon he began to think of himself: how long he could live with these diseases. He felt his pulse. It was silent; then suddenly it began to beat at the rate of one hundred and forty, seven per minute. He put his hand or! his chest to feel his heart. Well, it was not there; if at all it was there, It had stopped beating.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He felt all over his body but could not find his heart. He rushed to his doctor who happened to be an old friend. The doctor, heard his story, exammined his chest, took his pulse and then butted him with the side of his head.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Finally he wrote a prescription, folded it and handed It to him. He took it to the chemist. The man unfolded it, read it, and handed It back. He expressed his inability to provide the prescription he was only a chemist. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The author took the paper and read It. It ran I lb beefsteak every six hours; ten-mile walk every night; bed at sharp every night; and don’t stuff your mind with things don’t understand". The author followed the Instructions and is still alive. </span><br /> <br /></div>

One would think that getting rid of a pile of ordinary books is a simple affair. You just throw them out. But with Mr. Squire this simple affair turns out to be an adventure. Either he could leave the flat and leave it in the sole possession of his books or throw them out. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">One way of getting rid of books was to sell them but who would buy books of inferior minor poetry. He thought of burning them in his study fire .The fire place was so small that the books had to be burned leaf by leaf. He realized that it was a hopeless task to try to burn the pages without reading some of them. He could send them to soldiers as a gift. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The army always welcomes gifts of books. But Mr. Squire would not send his unwanted books to the soldiers or perhaps he thought that they deserved a quicker death. After much thought, he stuffed the books into a sack, put it over his shoulder and went down the stairs. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">It was nearly . midnight: Streets were deserted.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He turned up his collar and hurried towards the bridge. He had walked only a few steps when he came across a policeman. The policeman gave him a searching look. Mr. Squire trembled slightly. "What if the policeman suspected that fie was carrying stolen goods in the sack", thought Mr. Squire. However, the policeman went on and he resumed his walk towards the bridge. As he reached the bridge over the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/worlds-rivers.html" target="_blank"><b>river</b></a>, he became nervous. He leaned against the side wall of the bridge. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Suddenly he heard a footstep near him.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He sprang back from the wall and once again hurried on. The footstep came nearer. It was a tramp who paid no attention to him. He called himself an ass and prepared to throw the sack down Into the river. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">But then he heard another foot­step. He suddenly realized his situation, If he flung the sack into the river, there would be a great splash that would bring someone running to the spot. If it were a policeman he would never believe his story. So Mr. Squire hesitated, walked up and down the bridge in agitation for a long time. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He told himself that he was a coward . </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">After quite some time he got enough courage to lift the sack and fling it in the river below. With a great splash It hit the water. Then silence fell again. Nobody came rushing towards him. He turned home thinking about the books settling down slowly on the bottom of the river. He was a little sad. Perhaps the books deserved a better fate. </span></div>

In his earlier career he wrote fiction,humour and short stories in magazines.Then he wrote novels which became popular world wide.Between the years 1915 and 1925 leacock was most popular humorist. In 1906, he wrote Elements of Political Science, which remained a standard college textbook for the next twenty years . Stephen Leacock was died in Toronto in 1944 because of of throat cancer.He was burried in St.Yard church.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">After his death in 1947 An award was created at his name " Stephen leacock award."A National Historic site of canada was declared in 1958 .There is a museum called "stephen leacock Memorial house" in canada.A number of buildings are named after leacock in Canada. The writer was fully aware that the very sight of a bank made him nervous . The moment he entered the building he became an Irresponsible fool. His salary was raised by fifty dollars a month. </span></div> <span style="font-size: large;">He did not know what to do with the additional amount of money except to deposit It in a bank. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">So he staggered into a bank and went up to a window marked "Accountant". The accountant was a tall man and he made the writer really nervous. In a weak and shaking voice, he told the ac­countant that he wished to see the manager. The manager, a calm and serious man, came to the window. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The writer was becoming more and more nervous. He had his hand in his pocket and In It he clutched notes worth fifty-six dollars tightly. He asked, "Are you the manager?" "Yes", the manager replied. "Can I see you alone". </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The manager looked at him with some alarm. He, however, took him to his office and locked the door, Then they sat down and looked at each other. At last the manager asked him if he belonged to Pinkerton’s detective agency. The writer replied, "No, not from Pinkerton’s". </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Then he told him that he was not a detective, and he had come to open an account. The’ manager thought that his visitor was a son of a very rich family, that was why he had come straight to him for opening an account.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He asked "A large account I suppose".  "Fairly large", the writer whispered. When the manager learned that the 'fairly large’ amount was only fifty-six dollars, he was not pleased. He called to the accountant and told him to help the gentleman open his account of fifty-six dollars. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The writer stood up, said good morning and entered the big iron door thinking it to be the exit. It was not. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He had entered the safe of the bank .The manager quickly got him out-and showed the right door.The writer went up to the accountant’s window and pushed the ball of money towards him very quickly as if he was performing a juggler's trick. He signed some papers and the account was opened at last. By now the writer had become extremely nervous. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The bank swam before his eyes. He wished to draw six dollars for present use, but in his confusion he wrote fifty-six dollars on the cheque instead of six. The clerk could not believe it. He asked him if he wished to draw all his money. The writer felt unable to explain the mistake. So he tried to look like a man with a fearful temper and said, "Yes, the whole thing". </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He hoped that the spectators who had been watching his funny behaviour might think that someone had misbehaved with him and he had changed his mind to do business with the bank. The clerk asked him how he would have his money. The writer could not understand what he meant but soon he caught his meaning and replied, "In fifty-dollar notes".</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Of course he could get only one fifty-dollar note. As soon as the remaining six dollars were paid, he rushed out of the bank. As he went out, he heard a roar of laughter which hit the ceiling. <div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <h3 style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;">Jewel of the girl </span></h3> <span style="font-size: large;">  An ultra-modern lady belonging to tlie upper class one day visited a newly-opened shop in the commercial centre of <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/01/important-cities-of-world.html" target="_blank">city</a>. She came out of her Cadillac car and went in the jewellery shop. Earlier she had placed a <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/01/ways-of-information.html" target="_blank">telephonic</a> order for an identical pair of <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/mineralsgemsdiamondstopaz.html" target="_blank">diamond </a>sets. She was an old customer and had already bought one or two costly ornaments from the shop. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Naturally the firm treated her with great respect. The manager very respectfully accosted her to a private room. When she came in the shop, she saw only one set of diamond in the show case, but she had desired for a twin set. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The Manager told her respectfully that the second set is all but reary if she could wait a little. She said that she had an appointment, therefore, she would collect the other set in the evening. She bought one set, paid the bill and got the cash memo of it. In the evening, the lady came again. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The Manager took her to the private room and handed over the second set to her, adding that the cash memo was enclosed alongwith the diamond-set. The lady put it in her spacious hand bag and started moving towards the door without making any payment at all. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The Manager attributed it to her absent- mindedness. He politely threw a hint or two to her, but she ignored him completely. At last when she was almost out of the shop, he shouted at her. The aristocratic lady took it as insult and insisted that she had paid for the set. The Manager was taken aback at this high­handedn. Nobody could believe that such a well-dressed and apparently wealthy lady could commit a robbery in the broad-sun light. She threatened the Manager with dire consequences and asked for the police. The Manager also wanted the same thing.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> So the police arrived and a case was registered. Eventually it came up before the court for hearing. The investigations proved that the lady was innocent and that she had bought only one set of diamonds. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The number of the notes the lady claimed to have paid also tallied with the numbers of the notes found in Manager’s safe. The Bank also confirmed that it was the habit of the lady to note down the numbers of the notes whenever the amount withdrawn was large. The case was decided against the Manager. The firm had to pay the damages and the Manager was dismissed.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He also lost his security deposited with the firm. The Manager is still a bachelor . Sometimes he thinks that the lady might have-been suffering from amnesia due to which this unpleasant incident occurred. The manager was a simple fellow. He did not know that the people belonging to the upper class impress others by their show of wealth and dress. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">They deceive others by their show of snobbery . The poor fellow did not know that there people also suffer from the same ills as die poor. Therefore he thought Uiat the lady might have acted in a fit of forgetfulness. Moreover, die lady was their old customer. She had already purchased one or two costly ornaments from the shop. The dealings of the lady were always fair and honest.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> She belonged to the elite of the town and moved in large, expensive cars. It was unthinkable that she could act so meanly. But the fact was that she had not intentionally paid for the second set. She wanted to leane the shop hurriedly under the pretext of honouring an appointment. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The manager could not see through all this, nor anybody else took pains to detect the fraud of the lady Jewel of a girl is an appropriate title for the short story. The young lady has been ironically and sarcastically called Jewel of a girl’. She is very cunning and clever, but from appearances she looks respectable. By looking at her outward position, fashionable dress and Cadillac car nobody can get the least suspicion that she would commit such a big fraud. She has planned everything carefully. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Before the day the incident occurred she withdraws a large amount from her band and gets the notes signed. She has already given a very good impression to the manager of the shop about her and about her dignified behavior. She knows that nobody will suspect her of fraud. Even the court acquits her, because^nothing is proved against her. So much so that the manager even after losing his job, thinks that she was not a cheat.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> The title is quite significant and the story suggests a lot. No effort is made to trace the first set, bought by the lady, nor has it been mentioned in the court proceedings. Perhaps the writer wants the readers to fill up the gaps themselves. At the end we can only sympathise with die manager. By giving this title, the writer has hinted at the dark aspect of the upper middle class and the modern man . </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">High morality is of no significance to them. He wants to convey that the real jewel of a girl is her character. It was easy for the woman to execute the fraud It was easy for the lady to execute the fraud because she was a wealthy and fashionable lady, she drove in the large, expensive Cadillac car. She was clever and cunning. She was very wise and intelligent. Her mind was very imaginative. It was due to her cleverness that she won confidence of the manager, before committing this fraud. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">She had already purchased one or two ornaments and the management respected her for her patronage. She appears to be a professional cheat and a swindler. The writer is a keen observer of this type of society. He has studied the manners and habits of such people very minutely . </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">This lady also tries to impress others by her show, dress and fashion. Actually, she is shallow from inside. She lacks integrity and honesty . Luckily, she got the time on the day of the incident to show this hollowness. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The shopkeeper had only one set of diamonds ready. He promised to give the other set after some time. The lady posed as if she were awfully busy . she bought the first set, went home and left the set there. The same day she turned up again at 5 p.m. oid got the second set. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">But she wanted to leave the shop hurriedly, without, making the payment. The manager at first reminded her politely, then became straightforward. The lady took it as her insult and acted u a strange and assuming way. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">The manager and the people all around were all surprised. The police arrived. The case was registered, but her points were strong. It was proved that she was innocent. She not only got le other set, but was also paid the damages. </span></div>

He was born at Columbus and was educated at Ohio University. He was blind of one eye since his childhood. First he worked as a Code Clerk. Later he became a journalist and artist. He worked on the Paris staff of the Chicago Tribune till 1926. He then returned to America and joined the staff of the New York.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He became the life and soul of it. His other works, illustrated with his own drawings are numerous . One of them is The Trhurber Carnival which contains his most Important work. Thurber’s humorous prose and drawings are never gay because their enthusiam is dampened by melancholy -</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> His fantastic people and animals are distorted and mis-shapen by a malignant fate. Thurber has stated his artistic credo in these words; Humour is a kind of emotional chaos talked about calmly and quietly in retrospect. James Thurber died in 1961. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Snapshot of a Dog is taken from The Thurber Carnival which contains the writer’s most important work. Many of Thurber’s writings and drawings deal with dogs. He understands them, and he has the gift of relating stories interestingly. This piece is typical of Thurber. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">It is both homorous and serious as his writings usually are. The story flows along easily and smoothly, and the reader has the impression that the writer is talking to him. The writer looks upon the dog. Snapshot of a dog One day the writer was sorting out some old tilings. In them he came across a photograph of his bull-terrier whom he and his brothers owned twenty-five years ago. His name was Rex. He lived for ten years. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He was gentle by nature and usually kept quiet. Physically he was quite strong. He enjoyed dragging heavy things from different places. Once he brought a chest of drawers to the courtyard of the house from the back-gate. He never bit any person. No doubt he barked on thieves and suspicious persons at night. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He did not catch the other dogs by their throats but firmly gripped their ears. He did not start the fight but if somebody challenged him, he would not leave him. Once he fought with the dog of negro and held on so firmly to him that all methods failed to separate him from the other dog. All the traffic was blocked. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">One person tried to open Rex’s mouth with the help of a rod. The other brought fire near his tail, but he would not loosen his grip on his rival. At last the Fire Brigade was called. They threw heavy showers of water on him and it was only then that he left the other dog. This fight lasted from dusk to pitch dark one Sunday. Rex was an enemy of cats.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He took delight in killing them, though he killed them nicely. Even his masters could not stop him from killing the cats. It was perhaps a hobby with him. Like other dogs he never ran after the wagons or motor cars. Swimming was his favourite recreation. He swam in Alum Creek. He would swim up stream and back. for the pleasure of it. He had much fun in the water and would bring back a stick to you if you did throw one in it. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He was as powerful as a wrestler ( ). He played with the baseball and tossed it up. He could lift heavy objects front onejtlace to another. One night when he went roaming ( U I ) in the light of the moon he brought back a small chest of drawers form some unknown place. It presented a nice problem in transportation before him and it was a test of his mettle. Rex was a good jumper also. He could jump as high as eight feet. There was 110 such thing as impossible for hint. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">Even death could not beat him down. Once he was terribly beaten by the owner of a dog that he had got into a fight with. His head and body had been badly injured. When he came back, he started licking the hands of the writer and one of his brothers. The other brother was out. Rex waited for his third master and fought against death heroically till he came. He came after an hour. Rex walked towards him, touched his hand with his mouth and fell down. Thus he breathed his last before all his three masters.</span><br /> <h4 style="text-align: left;"> <span style="font-size: large;"> Qualities of Rex</span></h4> <span style="font-size: large;"> Rex had a gentle disposition .He never bit a person during his ten years’ life, nor ever growled at any one except prowlers. He had a strange hobby of killing the cats. His masters tried to stop him from doing that, but could not. However, he killed them quickly and neatly, and without any malice, the way men kill, certain animals. He never killed, or even chased, squirrel. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He never ran barking after wagons or automobiles. Perhaps he knew that he would not be able to catch them. He was very fond of swimming. He could swim upstream and back in Alum Creek, just for the pleasure of it,' like a man. He could dive into water from eight feet or more. Rex was also a great jumper. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">He would take on any fence that was pointed out to him. Six feet was easy for him, and he could do eight by making a little extra effort. In short, there was in his world no such thing as the impossible. Even death could not beat him down. He remained loyal and sincere to his masters even upto his last moments. He did not die till he kissed the hands of all his masters. Thus he lived and thus he died, bravely and heroically. Adventures of Rex Ans. Rex performed many deeds of surprising nature.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Rex was an American bull-terrier. He was big and muscular. He had a gentle disposition. He always tried to perform the extravagant tasks, his masters used to set for him. One of these tasks was to carry a heavy ten-foot wooden rail into the yard through the back gate, which was quite narrow. Since he could not bring the rail in broad side, he devised his own method to hold on its one end, and then brought it into the yard.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> His fight with a big dog of a Negro was also a memorable adventure. It lasted from evening till night. Rex held one ear of his rival with full power and did not release his grip, till the Fire Brigade came and a heavy stream of water was thrown on the dogs. It was also his habit to test his mettle by lifting heavy things. Once he was out at night on his usual stroll, he brought with him a small chest of drawers.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> He carried it for the fun of lifting it. He was also a great jumper and a great swimmer. He could jump as high as eight feet. As a swimmer, he swam up stream and back just for the pleasure of it. thus Rex lived a life full of adventures and died as bravely as he lived. Psychology of dogs The writer has not only given an account of an individual dog, but also he has thrown light on the nature of dogs in general. The faithfulness of the dog is proverbial and Rex remains true to his nature.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> Sincerity and love for the master is ingrained in his blood. He is badly wounded when he comes back home and knows that he is dying. He kisses the hands of his two masters, but the third one is not at home. He looks for him and with the sheer force of his will power prolongs his last moments. When the third master comes from outside, Rex walks a few paces towards him, touches his hand with his muzzle and falls down never to rise again. This example illustrates the unique quality of dogs more akin to faithful and sincere people.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> We also come to know that dogs can perform deeds of astonishing nature. They can lift and drag, heavy afticles. They have also a fighting instinct in them. The scene of their fights is very interesting as is in the case of Rex’s fight with the dog of a Negro. They are also great jumpers and swimmers.</span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;"> They could jump over high walls or fences with great care. This is why police trains them for such' purposes. They can also swim against the waves of water and try to perform odd jobs as men do. As human beings have their own individual philosophy, the dogs too have their own peculiar traits. </span><br /> <span style="font-size: large;">For example, Rex takes pleasure in killing the cats; but he does not kill the squirrels and does not run after the wagons or automobiles. He does not bite any body, but barks at the thieves and prowlers. He is never the first to start a fight with an other dog, but when he is dragged into the fight, he teaches him a lesson by holding on to one of his ears. Thus we see that the account of Rex’s life and adventures gives us an insight into the psychology of dogs. </span></div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Biography of Katherine Mansfield The author of short story Katherine Mansfield belongs to Newzealand. She was born in 1888 of rich parents. Throughout her life she went on receiving allowance from her father. After leaving the school she attended Queen’s College London, for four years and after two years stay at home she left New Zealand for ever and settled down in London where she married the famous man of letters, John Middleton Murray. Katherine remained ill for almost the rest of her life after, she came to live in London. During the last two years of her life, she worked with tremendous force and concentration; her best work is the creation of this period. This includes The Daughters of die late colonel and the stories dealing with Burnell family from which the present story The Doll's House is taken. She published in a German Pension in 1911 as her last hook. The Garden Party came in 1922, which started a chorus of praise on both sides of the Atlantic and was reprinted seven times in America. Her quiet, perfect craftsmanship is used in stories of character and scene rather than of action. The light touches serve to reveal personality or significance, and she is at her happiest in stories of children. She is particularly good wide fluttering sensitive types neurotic women ironically sketched and young girls lightly touched with sympathetic feeling, Whatever she wrote it was based on her personal experience,and thus all her writings are rooted in New Zealand, her native place. Katherine Mansfield’s technique is the most modern and she has contributed a lot towards the development of the short story. She is Remarkable for her freshness of approach and though her range is extremely limited, she succeeded in expressing the universality of experience. Apart from the beauty of her technique, the poetic quality of writing is also note-wordiy . She died in1923. Doll's house There are three Burnell sisters, Isabel, Lottie and Kezia, who belong to an aristocratic family. They get a doll’s house as a gift from one of their relatives. Mrs. Hay. who has come to stay with them. When she went back to town she sent a beautiful doll’s house for the Burnell girls. The Doll’s House is a wonderful gift and is complete in every respect. It is painted green and yellow, There is a beautiful lamp placed on the dining table, it has also a lamp in it. Two elderly dolls are in the drawing room and their two children are sleeping upstairs. The three sisters are impatient to tell all their friends about it. Next morning they hurriedly go to school. But Isable the eldest one, thinks that it is her right to be the first in releasing the information about the doll’s house. In the school, different children from neighbourhood come and mix up with each other as there is only one school in that locality. There are also two sisters, Lil and Else, They belong to a poor family. Their father is a jail bird and their mother is a washer-woman. Every body shuns them . They are treated as untouchables on account of their poor back ground. Every friend of the Burnell sister is invited turn by turn to have a look at the Doll’s House but the two Kelvey sisters are the.only exception. Not to speak of inviting them, the intimate friends of Burnell sisters, Emmie Cole, Lena Logan and Jessie May, who are of the same stock, laugh at the Kelvey sisters and humiliate them. They say that the Kelveys will become servants on growing up. Kezia the youngest of the Burnell sisters is different from her two sisters. She is considerate and has a soft corner for the poor. She asks her mother’s permission to invite the Kelvey sisters to her house to show them the doll’s house; but she is scolded for it she is in search of an opportunity to respond to the call of her conscience. One day the Burnells come earlier from the school, because there are guests in the house. The other two sisters go upstairs to change their dresses but Kezia sneaks, from another way and waits for the Kelveys. They pass by that way, She invites them to have a glimpse of the doll’s house. First the two sisters hesitate, but then go inside. Hardly have they finished their first look, when aunt Beryl appears there. She turns them out She also takes Kezia to task and shouts bitterly at her, "wicked, disobedient little girl". </div>
