The figure currently quoted in advertising circles is much higher, viz about 1,800 potential exposures each day." </span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: large;">These figures relate to the American society. The situation in Pakistan is also very ^encouraging. An average person in our society is exposed to a greater number of TV, Radio, Newspapers, Magazines outdoor t and direct mail advertisements.</span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: large;"> The role of advertisement in I Pakistan indicatedally by the fact, that there isccoAdvertisement is a communication tool |which influences our attitudes towards, products, companies, I lifestyles, and public issues. Advertising helps to determine that [which styles are fashionable and which public figures are our I next folk heroes.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;"></span><span style="font-size: large;">The proponents of advertising would like to have “economists agree,on at least four points:</span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">1- First, because of advertising, the country’s gross</span><span style="font-size: large;"> national product is greater and the standard of living is higher. Advertising creates generic demand, as well as, demand for individual brands and thus assists in the marketing of more and better products.</span><span style="font-size: large;"></span></p><p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: large;">2-A second argument put forth by advertisers is that advertisement plays a major role in informing the consumer so that more intelligent choices are made in the marketplace. There- are many historical monuments all over Pakistan, particularly in Lahore, which tell us the past history of our country. Millions of people visit every year the historical places of Lahore like Royal Fort of Lahore, Badshahi Mosque, Shalimar Gardens, Jahangir Tomb. These ancient buildings are the symbol of the glorious past of the Muslims of the Sub-continent. <br />Last month, the Head of History Department of our college decided to take a party of 25 students to the Shalimar Gardens.. <br />We boarded the college bus at 9 a.m. And it took us 45 minutes to reach the great historical monument. The gardens spread out in typical Mughal style and are surrounded by high walls with watch towers at the four corners. | The gardens were spreading over seven ascending terraces, but only three remain now which cover an area of about 42 acres. Then we went to the marble creating a water fall effect. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: large;">Across the waterfall is a marble throne. I went to the throne and sat on it for some moments. I was impressed to imagine the Mughal King sitting on that throne. After that, we visited other places of interest. We also took a few photographs of this building which are a sweet remembrance of our visit to this famous monument. <br /><br />At 5 p.m., we left the Shalimar Gardens for our college. , I We immensely enjoyed this trip. The memory of this visit will always remain fresh in o</span><br /><span style="font-size: medium;">ur minds.</span></p>

It is marked with excitement, nervousness and fears. So, it will haunt me forever in the years to come.</span></p><p> </p><span style="font-size: medium;">The first day at the college was considered to be an  important one because there used to be ragging in the college. The I seniors would make the new comers indulge in strange actions. So the | seniors had worked out their own strategies and we had decided to act together. So as we entered the college we met a few seniors who were approaching us with an air of superiority. They asked us to stop but we paid no attention. They were larger in number so they made us subdue immediately. Then they asked us to do strange things like singing ridiculous songs and doing monkey pranks. The sense of self-dignity in me did not allow me to act according to their wishes still they forced me' to obey their orders. I felt a little humiliated but took it sportingly. Later on, we came across a few more groups of the seniors, but we were able to outwit them somehow or other. <br />We went to the lecture room and mistaking it for a school we observed some rules of decorum. As soon as the teacher^ entered, we stood up' and greeted him. But we found a strange smile on the face of the teacher and it made us think that we had not acted properly. The teacher did not teach for some time and indulged in general gossip. It was quite amusing and there 4 was no strain upon our mind. After some time, we moved to n another room and we waited there for near about 20 minutesM but no teacher.turned up. In fact, it was a-problem to know to which room we were to move. There was nobody to guide us I and we were terribly afraid of asking the seniors. After, the 9 second bell, somebody told us that the classes were over. <br />As soon as I moved out of the. room, I started thinking that 9 in the colleges, perhaps, there was no regular teaching work. We also heard some of the seniors saying that their courses had not been finished and they did not know which books were to be studied by them. This made me think that school life was I better where we were forced to work. The college seemed to J have lost charm which I had been associating with the college life. The very first day of the college was a disappointing day 1 because I did not believe in wasting time unnecessarily. <br />I had carried a few books with me but could not make use i of them. Most of the seniors had neither, pens nor paper with them. No one was talking of studies; they were talking of film 1 heroes and heroines. They seemed to be more interested in fashions than in books. Conclusion.<br />In ancient Greece there was a school of austere philosophers who taught a strict and stern morality arid banned all pleasure as wicked. The light-hearted Athenians nicknamed them “Cynics”, or snarling dogs; for the Greek word “cynic” means “dog-like”. <br />The most noted Cynic philosopher was Diogenes, who showed his contempt of comfort by living in a tub; and who walked over Plato’s rich carpets with muddy feet, saying. “Thus I trample on your pride, Plato”:, <br />A cynic is a sneered. The words, sneer and snarl are connected. When a dog snarls, it is clearing its teeth to bite; and when a man sneers, he is preparing to make a biting remark. A cynic sneers at what others hold sacred. Properly, a cynic is one who does not believe! in the existence of disinterested goodness. As W.H. Beecher said; “A cynic is one who never Sees a good quality in a man, and who never fails to see a bad one”. He believes that every human action and profession springs from a low motive. A man is honest, he says only because he finds honesty pays;' a woman is chaste merely because she is afraid of the consequences of unchastity; a rich man gives to the poor simply to get a name for generosity; and gratitude, according to the cynic, is just “ a lively expectation of favours to come”. He is a septic; he says, “Believe only half of what you see, and nothing that you hear”. <br />Sir Robert Walpole’s cynical remark, “Every man has his price”, well sums up the creed of the cynic. He meant that every man could be bribed if you offered a bribe big enough. A man who would scornfully, reject Rs. 100, would fall for a bribe of Rs. 1000. Or, if money were; riot his object, an offer of high place-or great power or fame would buy his vote. The cynic knows the price of everything and every person. That is, he knows how much will buy the thing or the man; or he thinks he does. But of the value of the things of the greatest value in life he knows nothing. Qualities such as honesty, justice, mercy, kindness, love, compassion, honour, courage and heroism are beyond price. These are treasures which the jewel and gold cannot equal. The cynic knows nothing of the value of these treasures, for he does not believe in them.</span></p>

Conclusion. <br />One of Aesop’s Fables tells a story of an old man who was troubled because his sons were always quarreling. He was afraid that the family would be quite broken up when he died. So one day he called his sons together, and showed them a bundle of sticks, and asked them to break them for him. They tired in turn, but though  they were strong, all of them failed. Then he untied the bundle and  told them to break each stick by itself. This they did easily. In this way he taught them that union is strength. If they held together as one family, they would be strong; but if they quarreled and separated, they would be weak. <br />Take a football or hockey team- If the members of the team play together and help each other, they will form a strong team. But 0 if they are split up into parties, when they play in a match some will play badly or lazily, because they are jealous of the others, and the team will lose the match. <br />Sometimesa school or a college is spoilt because the . members of the staff,or the committee, are divided; and while they are quarreling, the work is neglected, and the college or school goes down. Often a whole town suffers, because those looking after the streets, buildings, hospitals, and water-supply, spend their time in i calling each other names. <br />The same is true in war. A large army, whose officers hate j each other and do not Work together, has been beaten by a’ smaller • united army. That is why the great French general, Napoleon, used to say, “Divide and Conquer. “He own some of his great victories by attacking One of his enemies when alone before the others could , come up io help, or he would weaken a whole nation by dividing it up into quarreling parties. <br />A united nation, a united family, a united society of any kind, is strong. United they stand, divided they fall. Their mOtto must be, “One heart, one way.” <br />The same is true is every field. If all the Muslims in the world are united, they are bound to make progress. Conclusion. <br />In England the cruel treatment of animals is a crime punishable by law and there is a “Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals” which does good work in bringing brutes who maltreat dumb creatures to justice. The Bible says, “A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast”, thus making kindness and justice to domestic animals an essential part of human virtue. Those animals, such as the horse, dog, donkey and mule, which men have bred and trained for their own use have a special claim on our mercy and justice; the more so as they are dumb and helpless in our hands, and cannot plead their own cause. The man who starves his horse, beats Ijis dog, or unmercifully overloads his ass, is a brute and a bully. He is also a fool; for even a selfish slave-owner knows that it is to his own advantage to have slaves well-fed and well cared for. And yet when we think of what many of these dumb creatures suffer at the hands of men, it is enough to make angels weep. As the poet Blake said:- <br />“A captive Redbreast in a cage Sets all Heaven in a rage.” <br />A great deal of cruelty to animals is due simply to thoughtlessness and lack of imagination. People do not always mean to be cruel; they just do not think. How many happy wild birds are caught and kept in small cages to please us with their songs! People think nothing of it, and imagine that if they keep the bird well-fed and its cage clean, it will be quite happy. But how can a wild think which has been used to flying in the sky in boundless liberty, ever be happy cooped up in a narrow space? Its songs should fill us with remorse rather than give us any pleasure. We cannot excuse our cruelty on the ground of thoughtlessness. It is our duty to think; and no one who cannot enter into the feelings of an animal and sympathize with it in its weakness and helplessness, Should be allowed to own one. <br />One cannot here discuss the question of killing animals for food. But if men must have meat to eat, it is their duty to see that such animals are killed painlessly. It makes one shudder to think what tortures sheep and oxen have to undergo at the hands of brutal men in unregulated slaughter-houses.<br /><br /></span></p><p></p>

We may first treat the question collectively and show^hat one nation’s food is another nation’s poison. Almost every country on the face of the earth has some peculiar delicacy, which would be rejected with loathing by the rest of the world. Some savage nations are or were cannibals, and it is said that, wherever this horrible custom prevails, human flesh is preferred to all other meat. The Savages of Australia eat insects and grubs; those of Tierra del Fuego, the putrid blubber of whales. The Esquimaux also live upon whale blubber, and supply themselves with vegetables out of the stomachs of dead reindeer. Herodotus, the Greek historian, mentions a tribe that subsisted upon lice or fir cones. <br />Among the great varieties of castes and tribes to be found in Pakistan, some are known to eat serpents, and one low caste devours greedily the flesh of cattle that have died of disease. The Chinese are said to relish rotten eggs, and they certainly regard soup made of a particular kind of bird’s nest as a great delicacy. The ancient Romans were found of edible snails, and highly esteemed, fish that were caught in the Tiber where the main drain of Rome flowed into the river. In modem Europe the Frenchman’s taste for frogs seems horrible and unnatural to the ordinary Englishman. <br />If we now turn from the consideration of nations to individuals, we find the same diversity of taste in the matter of food. What is harmless and nutritious to ordinary men act like poison upon some peculiar constitutions. Thus there are persons who have such a "strong antipathy to butter and eggs, or mushrooms, or milk that when they eat a dish partly composed of whichever of these is their particular antipathy, they become sick, even if they do not know beforehand what they are eating. These strange antipathies may be regarded as exaggerated forms of the likes and dislikes that manifest themselves whenever a party of human beings sit down to a social meal, though they may all being to the same country and the same class. Some like highly-seasoned dishes, Others prefer plain food. It is not every one who could relish boiled pork and veal pie with plums and sugar, although these were the dish'es that Dr. Johnson was especially fond of. Nearly every man has his own favourite fruit, vegetable, and drink. Some are too fond of wine, whereas others regard wine as poison and enjoy a cup of cold water. <br />There is the same diversity of tastes in a far more extended sphere than that of eating and drinking. The hunger delights is spending the whole day in the chase of wild beasts, and his pleasure is in comprehensible, to those who have not natural inclination for the chase, and cannot understand why a man should go tramping over hill and dale in the hope of inflicting sever bodily pain on animals that have never done him any harm Some have a taste for intellectual pleasures, other prefer active out-door games. Some love public life, others are so constituted as to prefer to live in seclusion. <br />Even where there is a general similarity of tastes, there are strongly marked special differences. What a variety of taste, for instance, we find among the lovers of books! A few great writers have won the need of universal admiration; but with regard to second-rate authors, numberless volumes have been written by critics in support of their own especial favourites. Much of such controversial writing is wasted. Difference of taste generally depends upon permanent mental characteristic, which cannot be altered by reasoning or eloquent pleading, so that there is a great deal of truth in the adage, De gustibus non est disputandum (there is no use in disputing about tastes).</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.25in;"><span style="font-size: medium;"> </span></p>

Some of foolishly expose themselves to frost-bite and other inclemencies of weather simply to be called conquerors of snowy peaks but the thrill-which these practical men get fails to stir their soul. Even if they simply profess, it transports them to some ethereal pleasure, no sensible person who experienced the vast range of vicarious pleasures would believe them. In fact he who knows how to build castles in the air know what the secret of perennial pleasure is, and which never gives one a feeling of satiety or frustration <br />Much has been said in praise of the warriors who by their barbarian exploits conquered their so-called invincible enemies. But is it not a fact that these conquerors could never lead a life free from the fear of being over-run by some braver and more crafty warrior or soldier. And this imaginary fear drove them from one inhuman act to another? Did not Aurangzeb subject his father and brothers to most inhuman treatment simply to become the unchallenged emperor of India? Also they had cared to know how unconquerable is the person <br />who handles sword in his dreamland where no blood issued and where forces fall as easily a butterflies in a young boy's net. Had they been contended with such conquests they might have not got a few pages in history read by bespectacled scholars, they would have, at least, remained unchallengeable masters of their domains. After all what does it matter to a person whether people talk well or had of him after- he is dead Then why expose ourselves to the smoky hazardous battle-field? Is not our unconquerable tort which is not to be defended by death dealing weapons better, it is in this world that intrigues find little head way. <br />No doubt achievements give us a sense of fulfillment and a feeling of joy. But this joy is seldom or never in proportion to our efforts. Naturally all our plans and the pains taken in executing them head to insignificant pleasure, Not only that, This pleasure is not lasting. It is bound to result in frustration if success in one achievement is not followed by another. A part from that we may think that we have done something remarkable but others might not This will prick the bubble of our pride and pleasure; the appreciation is whole hearted it might be only of section of people whose opinions we value the least, Then the fear of not being up to the mark also dissipate the pleasure we are likely to get from doing something concrete. And the period preceding our success is a period of great tension, in fact what we do by building castles on the earth is not to please overselves but to please others. We work as salves and not as masters of our souls. If still some think that there is no pleasure in idle dreams let them think so, It is a matter of opinion, and if we claim to be civilize we should not grudge them<br />the right to entertain worn ideas. Above all pleasure is completely a personal affair. When it becomes a community affair, as the pleasure from concrete achievement is, we may call it anything else, but to call it pleasure would be misnomer. <br />Nevertheless they who are earthy are contemptuous of day dreamers. The who ‘late and soon getting, and spending law waste their powers and little see in nature that is ours are prone to have such feelings for those who make plans and entertain hopes that can never be realised. But is the dreams of such dreams to whom we owe much of colour and joy in the world. They make our drab world permeate with whose who make life worth living. They wipe tears off every eye. They are the angles who do hot fear to tread or even to rush, whatever the attitude of the down-to-the dearth people may be. <br />It is a fact that in all ages such dreamers have been dubbed cranks. Nevertheless, it is the cranks of one age who dream of a world different from the one in which they lived that mankind have, though at a slow pace, become different from what other species are. The discontent of such dreamers with the present make them to visualise a world where mankind would enjoy the ‘sweetness and light’ they unconsciously had been instruments. <br />Day dreamers have super-human power of withdrawing themselves from the tedium of boring routine. They by virtue of sanguine optimism have the capacity to neutralize the blind darkness of the realist. The hopes they entertain never meet with frustration, and they with unheated zeal go ahead from one pleasure to another. This pleasure is rather unknown to those who cannot abandon themselves completely. An egoist who is ambitious to become supreme lord of a cherished domain cannot known this pleasure. It has rather a small collection of books but it meets the requirements of the students. The books have been carefully and wisely selected to create love tor literature and learning in the students. Thus, in spite of the limited number of books, it is of great help to the students. <br />Our library, along with the reading room, is housed in a separate block of the college. The bookcases with glass-fronts are placed all along the walls, Books on different subjects are systematically arranged in separate bookcases. When you enter the library you will find on your right bookcases containing books of fiction. A little further there are books on travel and adventure. In one corner of the room there is the catalogue cabinet. In a room attached to the library sits the librarian One half of the building serves as a reading room for the students. There, the students, when they feel like reading something, sit on chairs placed round a long table full of newspapers, magazines and illustrated periodicals. <br />Our teachers help the students in selecting good books. Their mature taste does certainly guide the students to select really good books. This is important, if one feeds on sensational stuff. But perhaps I do not possess enough knowledge to discuss such things. <br />What I know for certain is that I have spent many happy hours in the library and its memory will ever remain with me what have I gained here, I cannot answer adequately. But one thing I have surely learned is that the pleasures of reading are valuable. </span></p>

To me, this profession is the only profession in which a man can serve his nation in the best possible manner. But are they not what their professors and teachers have made them?</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> A teacher is like a ladder which remains at its place, but helps others to go higher and higher. So instead of being an engineer, a doctor, or an officer it is better to become a teacher. Secondly, I am suited for this profession. I take pleasure in solving problems and explaining them to others. I am fond of reading and teaching. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">By adopting this profession, I will be able to lead a life of learning. Thirdly, inquisitive natures may ask if I want to be a professor, why a professor of English. The answer is that English literature is my favourite. A man can serve his nation well only when he has some interest in the work he is performing.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Realization of such a noble ambition is possible only when a man devotes all his time to studies. Keeping this in view, I work hard and make intensive study of English literature, In future, I hope to produce such men as would be a great service to the coming generations, it is by writing good and original books. To celebrate his death anniversary a fair is held in the first week of June every year. <br />Last year, I attended the fair and I retain very happy impressions of all the sights and the sounds that I enjoyed, there. It was a cloudy day and on the way, I saw a number of villagers, dressed in their best clothes, going merrily to the fair. They appeared to be in high spirit, some of them even danced and sang for joy. <br />A number of booths and stalls, constituting the bazaars of the fair, met my eyes. Only such articles as suit the needs of villagers were sold at the shops. The chief among those were the earthen-pots, bells for oxen, toys, shoes, lathies, copper and brass vessels and ornaments. Crowds of customers stood at the sweet-sellers’ shops. Girls and women were busy purchasing earrings, pins, bangles and other articles of small value. In the midst of a vast crowd, I saw a juggler. He was accompanied by two confederates, one of them played upon the flute, while the other beat a small drum. The juggler was holding the villagers spell-bound by his clever feats. The simple villagers looked at him with wonder and felt almost delirious with joy at every new trick. <br />Evening came on and the villagers began to disperse. All of them carried something or the other, tied or wrapped'in a piece of cloth hanging from their shoulders. </span></p>

They did not understand the causes of physical changes taking place around them. They respected and worshipped the force of nature like the sun, the moon, fire, wind, water, storms, etc. They believed that diseases were caused by the wrath of gods as well as evil ^spirits. They tried to satisfy the gods with offerings, sacrifices, etc. They tried to prevent evil spirits by offering sacrifices. Sacrifice of birds and animals to please the gods and goddesses and to atone for one's sins was a common practice. Thus, it was fear which gave rise to superstition. ' <br />There are certain common superstitions which are shared by all the people in the world. Belief in spirits, ghosts and witches; the cries of certain birds like owl and ravens and- , mewing of cats are. superstitions followed all over the globe. It is also a common belief that when comets are seen, they cause the death of great man. <br />People in the West still regard ‘13’ as an unlucky number because at the Last Supper, Jesus dined with his twelve ' disciples and was later crucified. Salt was spilled on the table on which they dined and, therefore, even now spilling of salt is considered unlucky. They consider Friday as an inauspicious day to. start a new work. They also believe that going under a ladder brings ill-luck.  <br />India is the home of a number of superstitions. A cat a • crossing one’s path, the sight of a Brahmin, a sneeze or when 1 someone interrupts or calls while one is going out are all *, considered to be bad signs. The hooting of an owl and the howling of a dog are considered to be signs of death and danger. Contracting chickenpox is considered to be the anger <br />of a goddess. So, the goddess is appeased with offerings. When people build a new house or if it is a beautiful house, they hang an earthen pot with an ugly face painted on it on the facade of,their house. Owners of new vehicles hang women's braids at the back of their vehicles to vards off evil eyes. <br />Certain hours and days are considered inauspicious. <br />People consult astrologers and priests to know the auspicious 4 hours and days to start their work, projects and journeys., <br />Likewise, the time and date of marriage, inauguration and foundation-laying ceremonies are fixed according to the advice ‘‘of astrologers and the position of the planets and stars. <br />Some superstitions are supposed to bring good luck or happiness. People believe that meeting a Shudra on one's way for some work brings success. If one finds a horse-shoe and brings it home it could bring luck to the finder and the family. Breaking of crockeiy on the occasion of marriage ceremony is regarded as auspicious. <br />Superstitions can Sometimes, lead to horrifying crimes. Women, who were suspected of practicing witchcraft were tied and burnt alive. Joan of Arc was burnt to death because she was regarded by the Englishmen as a witch. Child sacrifices are made to please gods.'y;. ; i <br />In some cases, there are scientific reasons behind superstitions^ For example, dogs are very sensitive to changes around them. They become restless before the onset of a natural calamity and one cannot reject .these superstitions; which are backed by scientific reasoning. In South India, people apply sandalwood paste on their foreheads. There is, also a scientific reasoning behind it. Sandalwood keeps the forehead cool. <br />The world today is governed by science. Science has made life easy and man has advanced a lot. Superstitions have rio applications in today's life. So, we should hot follow the superstitions that were passed on to us by our ancestors. We  should follow only the, one's which have scientific and logical •» basis. A person believing in superstitions is always haunted by 'unknown fears and anxieties. He loses self-confidence. Thil time no foreign factor or element was Lolved against India to support the people of Kashmir, however, the Muslim people of Jammu and Kashmir go<br />inspiration from the Afghan Mujahideen’s struggle against the aggressor superpower - the Soviet Union ~ which had pulled out its invasion forces out of Afghanistan by mid- February 1989 after being humiliated by the oppressed but valiant Afghan Mujahideen. Like other oppressed peoples in the world, the people of Occupied Kashmir rose up in arms against India’s unjust annexation of the Stateof Jammu and Kashmir, continuing since 26th October, 1947. <br />A fresh turn towards resolving the issue of Kashmir was observed in post-September 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York and the defence headquarter Pentagon in Washington. <br />During the past 42 years, India adopted all measures to gobble up Freedom Movement of Kashmiri' the education was changed; all means of communicatidns i.e., radio, television, newspapers were used to launch Indian cultural invasion of the Valley; and no leaf was left unturned to transform the religious character of Kashmiris. <br />In its attempt to digest Occupied Kashmir, India had been trying to disturb the balance of population by settling alien Hindus in the Valley of Kashmir.
