The long and strong resistance shows that it is easy to get high ideals of life. The old man wins a victory oyer the marlin by means of will-power, technique and strategy. The memories, the thoughts of DiMaggio and Manolin, African beaches and his own wrestling defeating a Negro have symbolic significance. All these represent that man is ever alone but he has to fight the battle of life alone. <br />During his fight against Marlin or sharks, he speaks many times, “I wish the boy was here and I wish I had the boy”. The boy is a source of youth’s courage. He also remembers the help of the boy. He is compelled to hang on the line after hooking the Marlin. He thinks no one should be alone in the old age. <br />It seems that sharks have defeated the Old Man. Santiago has failed to save his huge Marlin from sharks. But the . writer wants to clarify that there is a lot of “gain” in the “loss” of big fish. The Old Man is winner against the hostile forces. He comes out of his conflict with human dignity and un-ended courage. He fights undauntedly and saves his honour. He is not defeated by the big fish. He fights like a warrior. He does well with all his energy, strength and courage. <br />Santiago in his difficult time is supported by the memories of the lions and the boy which are the symbols of his youth times. Through the double vision of the boy and the lions, he recollects the golden time of his youth and strength. This story when viewed in this way can be called as a parable of youth and age. <br /><br /></span></p>

The old man  going without fish becomes "Salao" and eventually his boat an “unlucky boat. Moreover, he respects the old man's ideas and appreciates his  youth-like aptitude for baseball <br />Manolin is indeed an equal of the old man in some ways. <br />We see the peak of this encouragement bond in the end when the old man is beaten by the sharks and he laments, saying: “I am not lucky. I am not lucky anymore.* The boy immediately rejoins him answering in art encouraging as well as healing tone:-“The hell with luck, I'll bring the luck with me. The old man fully understands the nature of this relationship and gives it great value. . <br />Only one utterance of old man, namely, “I missed you (Manolin)”, is sufficient to make us believe how greatly the old man is associated with the boy. The boy has a firm belief that there is only one great fisherman, Santiago. He can be seen crying in the end when the old man returns despaired and injured. Manolin cannot stand the sight of his state and he runs out of his shack'to get him coffee and eatables. <br />His decisions to rejoin the old man without caring for his parents shows his deep affection for the old man. Santiago, on the other hand, finds in Manolin the incarnation of his youth and skill. He is his family and his disciple simultaneously. We can, therefore, conclude on solid grounds that Manolin is not only an apprentice of the old man, but also his trusted friend and, in  some ways, his equal. <br /></span></p>

But he is confident and resolute. “But a man is not made for dfefeat”, he said, "A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. He tries to cheer up his spirits. He thinks about many things including baseball. He enjoys his killing the shark. Santiago kills the sedond and third sharks, hateful, bad smelling sea-vengers as well as killers with his knife lashed to an oar. But when the <br />gallons take with them fully a quarts of the Marlin’s best meat. “I wish it were a dream and that I had never hooked it," says the Old Man, “I am sorry about it, fish. It makes everything wrong. Santiago kills the gallons but it breaks Santiago’ knife. . <br />By the time, the Old Man has clubbed the fifth and the sixth sharks put into death just at sun set. But a full half of the Marlin has been eaten away. “What will you do now if they come in the night?" Asks the voice inside the Santiago. <br />The sun sets. What could he do iri the darkness of night? “Fight them", he says. It seems that the Old Man has lost this fight  as there is nothing left of the great fish except the skeleton. But he succeeds to save his' honour and dignity. His honorable fight proves him the greatest fisherman. He proves that he can never be defeated. It is not the big fish who has beaten him. He will be  counted as the undefeated fisherman. </span></p>

I t is obvious to us that Santiago’s greatness as a fisherman lies in the past. <br />The last section of the novel describes the Old Man's return to his shack and the reaction of the various people to his exploit. The whole of this short section is deeply moving- The Old Man’s journey up the hill, his having to rest several times on the way, his falling into a deep slumber, an examination of the marlin’s skeleton by the various fishermen on the seashore and, above all, the boy Manolin’s feelings on the occasion, these are all intensely poignant.</span>

But the boy goes to see Santiago very often. He encoarages him to go on the sea again. We can study his character under these features. <br />Manolin’s love for the old man is very deep. His love is that of a disciple for his master in the art of fishing. It is also the love of a son for an adopted father. He always helps him cany his lines, gaff, harpoon and sails. He brings for the old man beer, coffee, food and fish for baits. In the end, he brings ointment for the injured hands of the old man. He sympathises with him on his great loss. The old man always remembers the boy whenever he feels himself in trouble. <br />Manolin is there in the story to heighten our sympathy for the old man. Through him, we come to know that the old man is very poor. He lives in a small cottage. He has no money to buy a cast-net. Very often, he has no food to eat. He has no blanket to warm himself. At the beginning and end of the story, we look at Santiago admiringly.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Manolin is the symbol of Santiago’s lost youth. Santiago looks at the boy and remembers the days when he was young. Through the agency of  Manolin, the old man is able to recapture in his imagination the strength and confidence of his youth. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">When the old man is in trouble, he says, “I wish the boy were here.’ By this sentence, he invokes the strength and courage of his youth. In the beginning, it is Manolin who encourages the old man to go again for fishing. In the end, it is the boy who consoles the old man. Manolin appears to be. the only character'who realizes the significance of the tragedy Santiago has just been through, as he breaks down and cries several times.</span></p>

He was to show how much capable and successful he was in his own field. <br />Actually, baseball and DiMaggio became symbols of the energy that he had lost with time, and. he understood this. However, he wanted and tried to act “youthfully" to defeat the marlin and the forces of nature. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">This amounted to stretching himself too far, to exceeding his limits and to acting against the  realities of his situation, in a word, to overreaching himself. But he is not ready to yield. He is destroyed but he is not ready to accept his defeat. <br />The old man has the Christian virtues of humility, natural piety and compassion. When the boy praises him, he is not flattered. He knows that others are belter fishermen than he. He is kind to his fellow beings. He believes in God and prays to Him in trouble. He is compassionate to all. He feels pity for the birds who fail to catch any fish. But he knows that he is a harsh fisherman and he cannot do otherwise without. <br />The old man is very humorous. He is never harsh or angry. He talks to the fish in a funny way. When he catches the fish, he apologises to them and then kills them. He praises himself for his courage and confidence. He’ thanks God because the fish are not as intelligent as human beings who kill them. He prays to God that he will make a pilgrimmage if he catches the fish. <br />The old man has a symbolic importance in the novel. He represents man in conflict with the forces of nature. He is only a simple fisherman. But through his great struggle, he rises to the level of a hero. His relation with Manolin is also symbolic, the boy is a symbol of his lost youth.</span>

At night alone in his shack, Santiago dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa where he had gone on a sailing ship years before. He no longer dreamed of his dead wife. <br /> On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago rowed out of the harbour in the cool dark before dawn. After leaving the land behind him, he set his lines. Two of his baits were fresh tunas the boy had given him, as well as sardines to cover his hooks. The lines went straight into deep dark water. As the sun rose, he saw other boats in towards shore, which was only a low green line on the sea.<br /> A hovering man of war showed him where dolphins were chasing some flying fish, but his shoal was moving too fast and too fast away. The bird circled again. This time Santiago saw tuna leaping in the sunlight. A small one took the hook on his stem line. Hauling the quivering fish aboard, the old man thought it a good omen. <br /> Toward noon, a marlin started nibbling at the bait which was one hundred fathom down. The fish did not surface instead, it began to tow the skiff to the northwest. Although he was alone and no longer strong, he Had his skill and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to tire. The old man shivered in the cold that came after sunset. When something took one of his remaining baits, he cut the line with his sheath knife.<br /> Once the fish lurched suddenly, pulling Santiago forward on his face and cutting his cheek. By dawn, his left hand was stiff and cramped. The fish headed northward there was no land in sight Another strong tug on the line sliced Santiago's right hand. Hungry, he cut strips from the tuna and chewed them slowly while he waited for the sun to warm him and ease his cramped fingers. That morning the fish jumped.<br /> On seeing it leap, Santiago knew he had hooked the biggest marlin he had ever seen.
