 Hemingway has depicted the sea as a living character in the novel, “The
 Old Man and The. Sea". He has attributed many characteristics of a man 
to the sea which prove it to be a living character in the novel. The old
 man always thinks of the sea as feminine because in Spanish poetry the 
sea is treated as a woman. People call her La means feminine in Spanish 
when they love her. Santiago thinks that some of the younger fishermen 
call the sea as el mar which is masculine. They speak her as a 
contestant or a place or even an enemy. So different people call, her by
 different names but as living character.  The sea also plays a
 role of a teacher in the novel. It teaches the fishermen how to lead 
their lives and earn their, livelihood. It teaches the old man how to 
ask help from God at the.hard time of life. It proves to be a moral 
teacher for the old man. The old man loved the sea because it housed his
 friends  as,
 “perhaps its your first journey”. He wished him good luck. In short, he
 lived in the company of sea birds and sea creatures. He remembered the 
boy. He talked to fish. In this way, he fought against his loneliness 
and isolation.

<h2 style="text-align: left;"> Everyday is a new day, says Santiago. Comment. </h2>Ans: “Everyday is a new day," says Santiago. Santiago is right in saying that everyday is a new day because everyday he had new experience. He was riot successful for 84 days but he went on doing his job. He did* not lose heart. He kept on getting new experiences. He was satisfied with his fate. He used to say that one day he would catch a big fish. His fish might be here or somewhere and later as we. know that his words came true and he was successful in catching a big marlin. He struggled with marlin for three days and even those three days were not the. same. Everyday he had new struggle. He had to chase Marlin for three days and three nights. He was optimistic. He knew that at last, he would succeed. As we know that he had a'moral success because he did not lose heart. He kept on making effort till the last moment. He got new experience. That is why he said that everyday was a new day for him.

<h2 style="text-align: left;"> The biggest fish is the biggest challenge. Elaborate. </h2>The sentence presents complete symbolism. Hemingway presents the fish as the desire of human being, so the biggest desire is the biggest challenge. The sentence is given from that part of the novel when Santiago was t(ying/sail back to the shore with the hooked huge Marlin. Santiago ventures all alone. He fights with the big fish, Marlin. He uses his full strength, willpower and determination to come back-with, his reward. He fights with sharks which are. the symbol of hurdle in  a .successful life. He wishes to prove his worth against a worthy adversary, the marlin. He says; “1 will show him (Marlin) what a .man can do and what a man endures." Although the old man is physically weak, yet he is not ready to surrender. Because he wants to catch the big fish which represent the desire or success in the human life. In fact, i life is a constant struggle. The sharks do represent the evil faces. So to get the big desire, we have to fight with big evils or hurdles, as Santiago fights with the sharks with great courage, will-power and determination.

<h2 style="text-align: left;">Q: Describe Santiago encounter with the huge fish, marlin. </h2>Ans: The old man hooks the Marfin, drags his skiff for a couple of nights and two and half days. Another man in his place would have been in panic and given up, but the old man knows better. He knows that a fish, however, strong Sind big it might be, can’t drag the skiff forever. Hunger and toil must take its toil. In the * j meantime, he eats raw tuna to keep himself strong. At long last, the fish as he had predicted, starts circling. He now gains line with every circle, forcing the fish to come closer with every round. As the fish cOmes alongside, he pulls with all his strength, and turns “part way over but then it rights itself and swims away. It happens several times. The old man says, “Fish you are going to have to die any way. Do you have to kill me too?". He is so enamoured of the beauty and nobility of the fish that he calls it a brother. He even goes on to jfl say, “Come on and kill me. I don’t care who kills who.” As the ' fish, now tired and exhausted, comes along side, he drops the line, puts his foot on it; lifts the harpoon aS'high as he can; arid'9 drives it down with all his might “into the fish’s side just behind the great chest fin.” He feels the iron go in and pushes “all his-3 weight after it.” There oozes oOt a cloud of blood from the fish’s heart. It is dead. Soon it is afloat, green, golden and silver. The  greatest adventure on sea has been accomplished, although it is by no means the end of old man’s labour and struggle.

Santiago loved baseball. DiMaggio was the favourite player of the old man. DiMaggio has a special significance in the novel. He is the source of courage for Santiago. During the course of his struggle to catch the big Marlin, he is alone, tired, injured, hungry and sleepless. He begins to think of the league matches of baseball.</div><div style="text-align: left;"> But he does not know the result of these matches as he is far out In the sea. Santiago has the confidence about the potentialities of DiMaggio. To him, DiMaggio does all things, concerning the game of baseball, in perfect manner, even though he has pain of bone spur in his heal. </div>Santiago wonders what a bone spur is that if it is; as painful as the spur of a fighting cock. In his battle with Marlin and struggle against the sharks, he suffers a considerable pain and fatigue. He feels that DiMaggio has a superior capacity for enduring because DiMaggio is strong and young but youth and strength are qualities which Santiago lacks and needs especially now. Santiago gains strength from the idea of DiMaggio’s performing with the grace of a champion despite the pressure of his affliction. Santiago identify himself with JOe DiMaggio because he was as determine as Santiago. Like the bone spur of DiMaggio, Santiago has a frailty in his personality. He is weak and old. But like Joe DiMaggio, he is a man with strong determination.

man in general. The big fish represents the great desires of man. During
 his combat with the Marlin, we get the idea that man is great because

He fights against the sharks. He is tired but does not yield. In his 
struggle with the Marlin, Santiago does riot lose heart or experience: a
 feeling of helplessness or despair. The grace and the grandeur of the 
fish strengthen his resolve to show “what a man can do and what a man 
endures." The fish leads him to a mystic union, but toe fact 
remains that Santiago belongs to a temporal order of time. Hemingway 
presents toe fish as the desire of human being, so the biggest desire is
 toe biggest challenge for. the Santiago. He wishes to prove his worth

finds some meanings about life that life is constant struggle. So to get
 toe big desire, we have to struggle constantly with great courage,

<h2 style="text-align: left;"> Q:  Isolation can be destructive .How does the old man combat it in the novel ?</h2>Ans: Old man, the Santiago, was alone at sea as well as at land. He 
was alone. He had only a boy Manolin, who was his apprentice. Manolin 
was old man’s only companion on land. He was his friend, apprentice, 
companion and son-like. During his expedition, he was alone in the deep 
sea. He used to talk to sea birds, sea creatures and seldom himself. 
When he was tired and injured he talked to himself, "I hope the boy were
 with me." He loved the boy and all the sea creature. He enjoys the 
company of green turtles and hawkbills with their elegance. He takes 
pity on the delicate dark terns and says that these birds have a harder 
life than those of robber birds. During expedition, an 
eagle-like small bird came and sat on the string of the boat. He 
welcomed the bird and talked to it as, “perhaps its your first journey”.
 He wished him good luck. In short, he lived in the company of sea birds
