Q.7 Write a paragraph about the image created in your mind by reading the following poem. Take help from Unit 9, Introduction to Poetry. (15)
If you
can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk
with Kings—nor lost the common touch,
If
neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all
men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’
worth of distance run,
Yours is
the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which
is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
Answer:
In poetry and literature
“painting a picture with words” is known as imagery. Imagery uses figurative
language to represent objects, actions and ideas in such a way that it appeals
to our
physical senses.
Poets create imagery by using figures of speech like similes, metaphors, personification and symbolism
etc. Here in the poem “if’ written by Rudyard Kipling many images have been
created. Here success is personified as “triumph” whereas failure is personified
as “disaster”. Some examples of symbolism can also be seen in the poem. Crowds
symbolise the common people whereas kings represent the important people in
society. In other words kings and crowds symbolise two social extremes the
super rich and royal on the one hand and the common man on
the other hand.
“Minute” or time is here personified by the term “unforgiving”. Forgiving is a human quality attributed to “minute”here.
Kipling also uses many metaphors in this poem. For example he uses gambling and prizes as metaphor for what people have built during their lives.
Imagery is heavy within this poem as well. He uses imagery to describe elements of life such as truth and values.
Q.8 Write ten sentences having words with alliteration. Follow the examples. Consult Unit 9
for guidance. (10)
