Monolin, is the second main character of the novel, The Old Man and
The Sea". Santiago, the hero of the novel is spiritually associated
with the boy.
The old man has many pupils but he takes Monolin for his son and inspires him with his unflinching courage and dauntless role. Hemingway sets the scene of the devoted friendship between the old man and the young boy whose parents ordered him to forsake the old man and to sail with a lucky fisherman.
Monolin keeps his faith in Santiago and continues to help and visit him. When Santiago turns after losing his catch, it is Monolin who cries at the sight of the wounds, cares for him and vows that he will never allow the old man to be alone again. The salient features of Monolin character are as under: Monolin’s love for the old man is very deep.
The boys goes on any dangerous expeditions with the old man. He companies the old man for first forty days. His love is that of a pupil and also of a son. He always helps him carry his lines, gaff, harpoon and sails.
The old man always remembers the boy whenever he feels himself in trouble. He has full confidence in the skill and expertise of the old man.
Monolin is the symbol of Santiago's lost youth when Santiago is all alone at the sea for three days and three nights, he looks at the boy and remembers the days of his youth.
The memory and imagination of Monolin provides confidence and strength to the old man of his youth when old man is in trouble, he says Nl wish the boy were here”. Monolin encourages and in the end he consoles the old man.
Monolin is devoted to his parents as well as to old man. He also proves to be very helpful to the old man. Manolin is a good and fast friend of the old man and assists Santiago in fishing and everyday matters. He serves the old man with his sincere services.
