Computer is an electronic device used for processing and storing data according to the instruction given to it. Generally speaking, computer is a machine that computes. The word “Compute" means to count or to calculate. So computer is a device capable for performing a series of arithmetic or logical operations. It is different from calculator because it is able to store a computed program.
The history of the calculating machine is very old. The first calculating device was abacus and it was used b) the Chinese centuries before Christ. The first computet that could handle both numeric and alphabetic data with equal facility was UNIVAC (UNIVERSAL Automatic Computer). It was introduced in 1951. All these computers are called the first generation of computers.
In the present day, word computer is being used in ‘every field of life. Its frequent use in the realm of education has brought many facilities. The trend of distance learning is getting popular day by day. A learner sitting at a far-off iplace can connect himself to the mainstream of learning ^through the internet. Online evaluation system is available that has connected the people of the world together.
Computer has helped in conducting the, business of banks. ATM and online banking have brought numerous facilities to the customers. As a source of communication Land entertainment, computer is quite matchless. Video games are run by this device. Then we have music and movies that cheer up our sad souls in the dark moments.
