One Way of Love
All June I bound the rose in sheaves.
Now, rose by rose, I strip the leaves
And strew them where Pauline may pass.
She will not turn aside?
Alas! Let them lie. Suppose they die?
The chance was they might take her eye.
How many a month I strove to suit
These stubborn fingers to the lute!
To-day I venture all I know.
She will not hear my music? So!
Break the string;
Fold music's wing:
Suppose Pauline had bade me sing!
My whole life long I learned to love.
This hour my utmost art prove
And speak my passion---heaven or hell?
She will not give me heaven? It's well!
Lose who may---I still can say,
Those who win heaven, blest are they!
One Way of Love(Explaination)
Love Is a major theme-of poetry of all times and all languages. Man’s desire to experience love Is natural. In this world of selfishness and greed It is love that gives meaning to life and leads to happiness. "In one way of love" Browning tells his experience of love .He tries very hard to express his love In various ways but the lady he loves does not accept him. He scatters flowers in her path but she turns aside without looking at them. Perhaps she would listen if he expressed his love through music. For months he practised on the lute. When he was ready to play It before her, she refused to hear It. Then he thought of expressing his passion in a more direct way. She could accept him or reject him. Her answer might bring him heaven of joy or the hell of disappointment. Even if she rejected his love, he would not be bitter. Love is a noble passion in itself. It needs no reward. Those who love and get love in return are very fortunate.
For Browning love is an expression of the beauty and nobility of human soul, and is a blessing in itself. It is not Selfish.
He tried to draw the attention of his beloved by. scattering roses on the ways he had to pass. But she paid no heed1 to it. He tried to win her with music, but in vain. The poet says that he spent his whole life in learning the art of love. A time came when he was able to express his passion for his beloved in a charming way. He hoped to get her favours. At the same time he was afraid that she would reject him. Unfortunately, she refused to accept him. But the poet was not unhappy at this. He can still say that those who get their desires are fortunate. In fact, the poet believes in doing efforts without caring for the result .
