Q: Breakfast is a critique of modern civilization. Discuss.
Ans:
Breakfast is a short story written by American writers John Steinbeck. He perfectly understands human feelings. The poor and miserable condition of the field labourers and the farmers gives it a universal appeal. The author while travelling through the countryside early in the. morning chanced to meet a family who had fixed their tent ’ near the mountain. He saw a woman with her baby cooking breakfast with a cracked rusty and old iron stove. Meanwhile, two persons, a young man with dark stubble beard and a old man with grey stubble beard appeared from the tent.
They invited the writer to have breakfast with them and they also offered him for a job in the fields. The story artistically narrated the purity of living in rural
background. Actually, the writer wants to criticize over the modern civilization. He takes pity over the miserable plight of the people Irving in the rural area. They do not have their proper kitchen, no separate rooms for the children to study. They do not have well-furnished bathrooms In short, they are deprived of all the facilities of the modem life. The writer criticizes over the modem rulers who do not take any heed to the people living their lives below the line of poverty.
