Discuss in detail the use of elements suspense and irony in The Huntsman. (The Huntsman)

The poem, “The Huntsman” has been written by Edward Lowbury. The poem tells us a moral lesson that a man must think before speak. The poem is a good combination of irony and suspense. In the first stanza, there is an unbelievable incident. Kagwa finds a talking skull but skull’s talking is not possible. In fact, it. is a folklore of Kenya and it is necessary to create-suspense in it. Otherwise, the reader loses his interest and attention.

The poet has successfully created suspense because when we start to read the poem we become anxious to know the end. Suspense sustains throughout the poem. We come to know that Kagwa has died. There is also an element of suspense when Kagwa appeals the skull to speak something so that his life could be saved and this ironic situation. The elements of suspense and irony create shocking impact. The Huntsman himself becomes the hunted and prey to a remorseful fate.
