Explain the significance of the title of the poem,“Say This City Has Ten Million Souls”.

Ans:

This is a thought-provoking poem by W.H. Auden. The title of the mentioned poem has much importance. In this poem, the poet has described the very pitiable state of the German Jews who are trying to get shelter in another country. They have left their country because of the fear of Hitler. The city in which they are trying to settle is very large and has ten million people. But these two Jews are not allowed to enter this city. The Jew couple remembers their country where they cannot go. No country is ready to accept them. The governments are hostile to refugees. Even dogs and birds are living more freely. Some countries think that they would be a burden on their economy..Ten thousand Soldiers are looking for them to push them because they are ordered to do so. No country is ready to accept them. Therefore, they are confused where they should go now. We conclude that the title of the poem signifies the pitiable state of the two German Jews and unwanted attitude extended by some governments who are not ready to give them shelter. as different from Charles as two men can be. John doesn’t broadcast charm.”
Primrose tells her mother that John will prove himself a faithful husband. She also begs pardon about rude behaviour to her mother and aunt. Lucy yields at last before the will of her daughter by that it is always a losing game to be a mother for she has been losing her grip over her daughter as she grew from a baby to young independent women. But still she stands behind the smoke-screen fully determined that if John will not kind to Primrose, she will kill him!
