In the poem, 'The Rebel” by D.J. Enright explains various facets of the protagonist of the poem. This protagonist is fake, not real, but he contains an importance. The poet introduces a person who does not conform to the social environment of the society. He carves out his own world which is absolutely different from the society. He wants to make difference. He tries to set his own ways for leading life just for the sake of his importance.
Each and every act of his life is against the society but he never harmed others. He only wants importance and appreciation. He does not like to be made a yes man. In spite of contradictory behaviour, the poet says that the protagonist is a very important person. His every action is motivated by self-assertion and individualistic show. The protagonist’s action is motivated either of the sense of inferiority or insecurity. The poet asserts to bear with the eccentric attitude of the protagonist.
