Write a detailed note on the nature of conflict between Philip and James.
Ans: Milne provides fun and amusement dialogue and action. “The Boy Comes Home’ is light comedy. Uncle James always considers then immature, lacking the intelligence and experience to the business. He is rather rude and harsh to the boy and dictated him to act and behave as he wished. Philip has never been on good terms with his uncle.
Philip fought in France against German and killed many of the men acquires experience in the army. He serves to army for about four years and grows up physically and mentally into a man. He returns from army to his uncle’s home who is his guardian. Uncle James still presumes that he is a boy and must be guarded and instructed to select his Mil career. But Philip is not ready to accept his instructions and demands that he should be given free hand for the selection of business for his future career. Moreover, he gets up late and takes breakfast late.
This thing is also against the rules and regulation of the home. He also quarrels with Mrs. Higgins the cook, when she tells him to be in time for the breakfast .One day when James is waiting for the Philip in the hall, he dozes and has a dialogue with Philip. Philip wants to become an architect and threatens his uncle.
He threatens his uncle to agree with his proposal. He takes out pistol and Uncle Jam wakes up. He then agrees with his proposal and Philip then begs pardon for misbehaving. Philip is afraid of his uncle but after dream, uncle is afraid of Philip. At the end their conflict comes to an end. The dream has a great importance in the play which reverses the play completely.
