<span style="font-size: large;">The Atlantic is the second biggest ocean. It stretches from the western coasts of Europe and Africa to the eastern coasts of North and South Americas. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Indian Ocean stretches from the eastern coast of Africa to the northern coast of Australia. It lies to the South of Asia.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">How continents formed </span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Millions of years ago, the two continents of America were part of the land mass making up Africa, Europe and Asia. Violent changes in the interior of the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/our-lovely-planetearth-creation-origin.html" target="_blank"><b>earth</b></a> wrenched the two Americas apart and pushed them westward.

A similar view has been put forward about Australia which is said to have once been a part of Asia and Africa.

Geologists believe that all land masses of the world were once a compact

whole, surrounded on all sides by water. By and by, wild geological forces broke up this compact mass of land into the present day continents. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">This led to the formation of seas and oceans. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Formation of seas </span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;">The seas are very important to us as a source of food supply. Population explosion has now forced man to turn his gaze to the sea as a source of food supply. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Sea-Weeds and Grasses are being used as fodder for cattle.

Sea Plants are being used for medicinal purposes and for the preparation of

Besides sea plants, the seas are'teeming with all kinds of fish and other marine life. The largest living creatures, the whales are found in oceans and seas. Table salt is also obtained by evaporating sea water. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The depth of the sea is not the same every where.

The .edges of the continents are covered with shallow waters, not more than 100 fathoms deep. The sea bed beneath these shallow waters is called the‘continental shelf.

The slope of the continental shelf is usually gentle.

In most areas the coast of a continent is bordered by mountain ranges.

In some places the continental shelf is narrow and its edge lies close to the shoreline. But where the land of the continents slopes gently to the shore-line, .the gentle slope continues beneath the sea and the shelf is broad. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> The waste of land, as a source of food for marine life:</span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Much of the waste of the land brought down by rivers, is spread over the continental shelf. This waste, directly or indirectly provides food for marine life. This is one of the reasons why the world’s chief fishing grounds are found where shallow waters cover a wide continental shelf. The great banks of Newfoundland and the North Sea are the most outstanding examples.' </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The Continental Slope: </span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;">The continental shelf, whether narrow or broad, at last dips steeply to the bed of the ocean. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The steep slope, beyond the 600—foot line is known as the continental slope.

Beyond the continental slope lies the immense expanse of the ocean floor, some kilometers deep. Very little of the silt brought down by rivers can find its way to the ocean floor. One finds scattered around are the bones of marine animals.

The ocean floor contains some of the greatest known depths. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The deepest of these lies in the Pacific, close to the Philippine Islands. The depth of this trench is about 11 km.

Waves are caused by the wind in the sea. The gusts of win make the water at the surface rise and fall.

The sea-water regularly rises and falls twice a day, due to gravitational pull of the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/moon-of-earth.html" target="_blank"><b>moon</b></a> on Earth. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This periodic rise and fall of the sea water is known as tides. Waves can be dangerous for boats. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> There is a constant flow of sea water along well marked paths, much like the flow of a river on land. Quite a number of such <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/worlds-rivers.html" target="_blank"><b>river</b></a>s keep running across the oceans of the world. They are called ocean currents.

Around the Equator, the rays of the sun fall almost vertically throughout the year. They heat up and expand water of the ocean. This raises the surface of the ocean.

The polar regions, on the contrary, always receive slanting rays of the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/sun-and-its-rays.html" target="_blank"><b>sun</b></a>. this keeps the ocean waters cold. The surface of the ocean gets pressed down.

The immense expanse of the oceans has to keep'its level. So waters from equatorial region start flowing towards the poles. To fill up the void created by the flow, cold waters from the poles start flowing towards the Equator. Thus a network of warm currents and cold currents of ocean water comes into being. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The currents of oceans greatly influence the human life in many ways.

Ocean currents exercise a good deal of influence on the climate of many

parts of the world. The global net-work of currents is a device used by nature to keep the temperature of the various seas and oceans within a limited and reasonable range. Incidentally this also helps to reduce the vigours of weather in . many parts of the world. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Warm currents of ocean </span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;">Warm currents flowing past cold lands, make the weather mild. This is what the Gulf Stream does to the eastern coast of the United States, or the North Atlantic Drift does to England and Scandinavia.

Cold currents, on the other hand, bring down the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/temprature-of-earth.html" target="_blank"><b>temperature</b></a> of the places they pass by. The cool California Current, passing along the western coast of North America, has a cooling effect on the climate of the coast.

Warm currents also help rainfall. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">They bring with them moisture laden warm air which proves a source of rainfall.</span><br />
<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Cold currents of ocean</span></h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"> Cold currents, on the other hand, hinder rainfall. The cool air they bring with them has relatively little power to hold moisture. Such winds cannot bring1 much rain.

Currents bring good type of fish with them to the warm countries. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Currents can be of much help to ships cruising with them.

The gusts of wind produce ripples on the surface of the sea. There ripples makes the water rise and fall.

Generally in open seas, waves do not rise very high. But, in close seas, the waves can rise very high, especially close to the coast. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">They can be dangerously high when the sea is rough. Navigators of boats and small ships have to be very careful about stormy waves. Because these high waves can be dangerous for them.

<span style="font-size: large;"> Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon on the earth. The sun, too, has its gravitational pull which is huge compared to the moon. But the moon is so much nearer the earth that its tide-rising force is more than twice as great as that of the sun. The ratio is about 9:4. Sometimes the moon and the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/sun-and-its-rays.html" target="_blank"><b>sun</b></a> pull together. The result is an unusually high tide. Sometimes they pull to different directions. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The result is as unusually low tide. The sun can only help or hinder the tide raising effect of the moon’s pull.

The moon’s pull affects the liquid-covering of the earth much more easily than the solid portions. The water on the side of the earth nearest to the moon gets heaped up into a great wave. This wall of water rushes onto the coast. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Water level goes down in areas from where the water has been pulled up. Exactly opposite, on the other side of the earth, there rises another high tide. This is because the earth’s centre, being closer to the moon than the sea on the other side, gets pulled up towards the moon. This creates a vacuum, in the ocean, to fill which water comes rushing from right and left. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Thus the moon’s pull produces two tides at one and the same time, at two opposite places of the earth. The two high tides naturally produce two low tides at two opposite places of the earth. As the moon races along its orbit, its pull keeps shifting from one part of the earth to another.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Every six hours, the places of high tide have their low tide and those, of low tide get their high tide. Thus twice a day the water rises and twice a day it recedes on every sea coast.

At new moon and full moon, the sun, the moon and the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/our-lovely-planetearth-creation-origin.html" target="_blank"><b>earth</b></a> are practically in a straight line. The attractive force of the sun adds to the pull of the moon, five result is two flood tides much higher than the average. As a natural result, the low tides are lower.than the average.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Such high tides are called spring tides.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> They occur twice in a lunar month.

On the 7th and the 21 st days of the lunar month the pull of the moon exerts itself at right angles to the attracting force of the sun. In other words, the two bodies are opposed to each other. The tide-raising force of the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/moon-of-earth.html" target="_blank"><b>moon</b></a> is lessened. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The result is a high tide much below the average height and a low tide that does not recede so far. There is less differences between high and low waters. Such lesser tides are called neap tides.

There are many uses of the tidal waves.

When high tide recedes, it leaves behind various kinds of sea shells and

sometimes even mother of pearl. These are collected and put to a number of uses.

In funnel-shaped estuaries, the tidal wave travels up rapidly and makes it possible for ships to travel further up. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Tidal waves help to keep the channel free from silt and mud. This makes the sea-port useable for the ships and the boats.

Big cities situated on the sea-side dump their garbage on the coast, to be w'ashed away by the high tide. </span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;"> “The Star” by H. G. Wells is an interesting story which gives a vivid account of the consequences of disturbing the balance that keeps our solar system going.

On the first day of the new year it was observed that the motion of planet <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/two-most-important-planetsneptune-and.html" target="_blank"><b>Neptune</b></a> had become erratic. Later a tiny speck- of light was seen near that <b><a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/what-are-planets.html" target="_blank">planet</a>.</b> It grew in size and brilliance as the days passed.

On the third day of its appearance, an astronomer- announced that strange speck of light was in reality a heavy mass? of matter. It had fallen away from its orbit somewhere in the distent parts of the black empty outer space. It was heading for a collision with Neptune. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">People all over Europe could see it growing brighter with every passing night.

The master Mathematician, tired and gloomy, He had kept himself awake and active for four nights to calculate the course of the new strange star. He had finished his work.

The next dav at noon he entered his lecture theater and announced, “Circumstances have arisen which will not allow me to complete the course”. He paused and then announced, “Man has lived in vain.” He turned to the blackboard and explained why man had lived in vain. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">That night, the star rose later but it had become extremely night. The whole humanity was awake that night watching the star Or waiting for its appearance. The faithful prayed to God to save them from the coming doom. Crowds of people began fleeing to mountains. Still the great majority of human race went about its usual occupations. The master mathematician’s forecast about the end of the world was taken seriously only by a few.

The next night the star appeared an hour later than the previous night ]t had now grown brighter and larger. Many people thought that,the danger of the star’s collision with the <b>earth</b> had passed. But then all at once it began to grow rapidly, becoming brighter and hotter every hour. By now the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/03/worlds-glaciers-and-ice-ages.html" target="_blank"><b>ice</b></a> on mountain tops had begun to melt. In many parts of the world <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/worlds-rivers.html" target="_blank"><b>river</b></a>s were swelling. Hot winds had begun to sweep and heavy clouds to gather across the continent of America. The whole of Asia was under water.

Then came a wonder</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The star and the<a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/our-lovely-planetearth-creation-origin.html" target="_blank"><b> earth </b></a>swung about each other and the star missed the earth and crashed- into the <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/sun-and-its-rays.html" target="_blank"><b>sun</b></a>. Clouds covered the entire sky. For days and weeks heavy rains lashed the earth and quakes shook and tore the earth.

When at last the rains, storms and quakes stopped, the survivors - there were not many found that the earth had undergone a great change. Nothing looked familiar. Most of the polar ice had gone. The sun had become larger than before. The <a href="http://educational-wealth.blogspot.com/2014/02/moon-of-earth.html" target="_blank"><b>moon</b></a> had shrunk to a third of its size and took eighty days to go round the earth. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The cities, the factories, the laboratories and the libraries man had built during thousands of years were all destroyed. A whole civilization had been wiped out.A few million miles away, Martian scientists were observing the effects of the missile they had hurled through the solar system. They thought that it was surprising that the earth had suffered so little damage - only the shrinking of polar ice. They could not see the destruction of hum civilization.

<span style="font-size: large;">Small boys and children have caught the infection. Perhaps they are made to beg by their guardians. The beggars’ gather at places frequented by the people. The bus stands, market places, post offices, railway station and mosques are their favourite haunts .

It is impossible to move about those places peacefully. </span><br />

Some child-lifters, in the guise of beggars, are on the lookout for abducting children. Two or three cases of this kind have occurred recently, and the culprits have been caught red-handed. She lost her wits and tried to run back to the footpath. But the bus struck her and she was crushed under it. Someone called in a doctor, but she died before any medical aid could reach her.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">You cannot imagine the horror of the sight. The poor old woman was lying on the road in a pool of blood. Her body had been badly disfigured . Everyone felt sorry for her; some had tears rolling down their cheeks. But she had no need of their pity. She was past all this.

Meanwhile, two policemen arrived there and began the investigation. I left them recording the statements of the bus and the Tonga drivers, and returned home, sadder than ever.</span><br />

On the fixed day I reached the Lahore airport. A big jet plane was ready to take off. 1 took my seat in it. It could accommodate more than two hundred persons. I got a seat near a window.

Before the plane started, we were asked on the microphone to the safety belts to our bodies. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Then the engines started and they made a great noise. The plane moved on the runway slowly. It soon began to run fast. Suddenly, with a jerk it lifted up - and up and up it rose. I felt a strange pleasure, mingled with fear, as if riding a flying horse.

Soon we were flying above the clouds. I looked down. 1 could see through the openings in the clouds the river Ravi as a muddy ribbon of water. I also saw some dots here and there indicating villages. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We were about a mile up in the air.

After about an hour and a half it was announced that we were approaching Karachi. Within a short time the city was in full view. Our plane began to get lower and lower. I felt myself floating on my seat but had the safety belt on. With a dash, the plane headed towards the aerodrome. It touched the ground, and then wheeled on the runway at a terrific speed.

I got down. My uncle was there to receive me. We hired a taxi and drove to the city. </span><br />

But on entering college I started playing basket ball. I like it, because it gives me the maximum of exercise within the shortest time. One has always to be active to catch the ball and pass it on or score a goal.

While I played hockey there was hardly a day when somebody had not hurt his toe or strained his ankle. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">But there is no such thing in this game. You could hurt someone only with your body but as soon as you touch someone, the referee’s whistle goes and a foul is declared against you. If you commit too many fouls, you are sent out of the playground.

I have now plenty of time for studies. In less than an hour, we have played the game, exhausted ourselves and gone back to our homes. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It gives full exercise to my body and I feel relaxed. So basketball is my favourite game and I intend to win distinction in it. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Once a hunter had a faithful hound who was very much attached to his little son. One day he went out hunting and left his son sleeping in his bed. There was nobody else in the house.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">When he reached the forest, he found that his hound was not with him. He was annoyed. He returned home and saw the hound standing in the door. Its mouth and paw’s were bloodstained As he entered, he found blood all about the house. He suddenly went cold when he thought of his son. He called out his name but nobody replied. He became mad with grief he called again and again but no voice responded .  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He looked back at the hound and an idea flashed across his mind: “The hound must have killed my son.” He whipped out his sword and killed the hound. At the same time he saw his son coming to him. He ran and embraced him. The little boy took him to the room and showed him the dead body of a wolf. The hound had killed that wolf and saved the boy. The hunter could not help crying on what he had done in haste</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Kindness is a noble sentiment. Even the fierce animals arc affected by kindness.It is said that in a certain country there lived a slave who was a kind man.His master was cruel man.He tortured him without any excuse. The slave did every thing to please his master but to no avail. So he decided to run away.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">One night he did escape out of the house and took the road that led to another city. On the way he reached a big forest and sat down under a tree for rest.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Suddenly he heard a roar and the next moment a big lion was standing near him .He could not run away. Then he saw that the lion did not jump at him. It was striking its paw on the ground The slave saw that there was blood on it .He held the lion's paw in his hand and found a big thorn in it.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He took out that thorn. The lion licked his feet and went away.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">After a short time he heard voices of people. Before he could run away, a group of soldiers had surrounded and arrested him. He was taken back to the city and put into the prison. His master had lodged a complaint with the government, for the slaves had no right to run away. The authorities decided that the slave should be thrown before a hungry lion so that the other slaves would rot dare follow his example.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">On the day of execution, the soldiers brought him to the arena (led) built for such purposes, and they pushed him into the cage of a big hungry lion. As soon as the lion saw him, began to roar. But suddenly it stopped roaring and began to lick the feet of that condemned man. It was the same lion whom his slave had helped in the forest. It had recognized him.</span><br />

Avoid bad company. You will come across some students who have no other work except roaming around the city and visiting restaurants and coffee houses. They are habitual cinema-goers. They have no interest? in their studies. If you are not cautious, you may become one of them. Whenever you have some temptation .Remember the purpose for you have gone to a distant city.

You should not become a book worm either.</span><br />

Prepare your lesson a day earlier. Always be attentive to the lecture of your teachers. If you do not understand anything, stand up and ask them to explain it in detail. Show great respect to all of your teachers.

You will also enjoy "Alice in Wonderland". This book will tell you how humour is created out of nothing. </span><br />

imagination.

These books will give you great pleasure and will become your lifelong friends.

<span style="font-size: large;">Once upon a time three travellers met on the road. They found that they had to go in the same direction. So they decided to travel togoher. They walked on, talking and laughing and in a short time became friends.
On the way they passed through a forest. They were tired and the cool shade of the trees templed them. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So they sat down under a big tree to relax.
Suddenly, they saw something at a distance glittering in the sun. They hurried towards it, and found that it was a big metal box. They fored it open. There were some clothes and gold ornaments in it. They were naturally very excited and happy. They divided the ornaments equally among themselves and once again lay down on the grass. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">After some time they felt hungry. One of them offered to go to the nearby village and get food.
When he had bought food, an idea came into his mind. Fie thought that he could get all the ornaments. He bought some poison, mixed it with food and went back to his companions.In his absence, the other two men conspired to kill him and get all the gold. Therefore, as soon as he returned they fell upon him and murdered him.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> They took his share of ornaments and divided it. Then they began to eat the food he had brought. They had not finished the meal when, crying with pain, they fell on the ground and died. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">With a start, he sprang up and ran for his life.Soon he was at a safe distance, and he hid himself in a bush.
But his hounds had not lost his scent . They followed him and reached the bush. The slag jumped up but fell back. His antlers had been caught in the bush. He struggled very hard but to no avail. He cursed his horns, but that did not help. With a cry of triumph the hounds fell upon him and tore him to pieces.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Once a miser lost his purse containing all his wealth, a hundred pieces of gold. He made frantic efforts to recover his money but all in vain. He was so perturbed over his loss that he lost all interest in life. He had no appetite for food. In a couple of days he became very weak and could not walk out of his house. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> A sympathetic friend advised him to offer a reward to recover his money who might find and restore his treasure to him. After a good deal of hesitation the miser agreed to this suggestion. He called a town crier and told him to announce in the city and its suburbs that a ten gold pieces would be given to the man who brought him his purse. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> After a few days, an old farmer came to the miser and gave him his lost purse. The miser at once opened the purse and counted his gold pieces. They were exactly one hundred. He thanked the farmer. The farmer demanded his reward. The miser answered, “You have already taken your reward. There were one hundred and ten gold coins in the purse. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Now there are only one hundred ”

The farmer became angry. He went to the court and put his grievance before the judge. The judge summoned the miser and asked him to answer the allegation . The miser gave the same answer which he had given to the farmer. The judge ordered him to produce the purse, which the miser very reluctantly did. The judge examined it very carefully and gave his decision. </span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-size: large;">He said that the purse had the capacity to hold only one hunured coins of gold, but the miser’s purse contained one hundred and ten coins. So he declared that the purse could not be the property of the. miser. He gave that purse to the farmer, because no one else claimed it. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Once there lived a jackal in a forest on the bank of a river. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">There were many fields of melons on the other side of the river. But the river was deep and wide. He did not dare enter it. He went to a camel and asked him to carry him to the other side ol the river. The camel agreed.

At night the camel, with the jackal on his back, waded through the river. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The jackal was very happy. He entered the melon fields and began to eat melons with relish .

When he had eaten to his fill he began to howl. The came1 asked him not to make a noise. But the jackal replied that if was his habit to howl after taking his meals.

On hearing the Jackal's howl, the villagers came running towards the fields. The jackal ran away and hid himself in a bush. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The villagers found the came1 and with their sticks fell on him. The camel ran towards the river, but on the bank he collapsed. The villagers left him and went away. Now the jackal came out of his hiding and went to the camel.

After a long time, the camel felt strong enough to get up and cross the river.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The jackal jumped onto his back. When they reached the deep water of the midstream, he came! stopped there. The jackal asked him what he was after. The camel replied that it was his habit to take a bath after taking a severe beating. Saying this, he dived in the water. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The jackal fell into the water and was drowned. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Once a wealthy merchant was going home after selling his goods in the city He had a large sum of money with him and had to go a long way. He was getting dark. So he stopped his horse to a roadside and waited for the storm to spend it's force. He cursed the rain which had forced him to stand there in a cold night and shiver like an autumn leaf caught in the wind. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">After an hour or so, the rain stopped, and he started his journey once again. But a little farther, he found his way blocked by a fallen tree. He reined in his horse. Suddenly a bandit appeared from

behind a tree. With an old style gun in his hand, he approached the merchant and said, “Jump down from your horse and give me your purse. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">1 need both the money and the horse.”

The merchant was a sturdy brave man. He jumped down and before the rogue could move a finger, took hold of him by the throat and with a powerful blow sent him flying in the air. But the next moment the man was up on his feet. He took aim and pulled the trigger.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> But it did no' fit , he pulled the trigger again but nothing happened. The powder had become wet by the rain. The bandit cursed the rain and took to his house. Only then the merchant realized that the rain had been a blessing for him. </span><br />

The man, fed up with the mice’s tricks, bought a large cat. On the very first day the cat came, she caught two-fat rats for her lunch. The others ran into their holes. But they could not keep to their holes for long. In the evening some rats felt hungry and came out. They had hardly started nibbling at a fruit cake in the kitchen when the cat pounced upon them. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> They ran to their holes, but one of. them had bean caught in the paws of the cat

Now the life of the mice bcame miserable. The cat hunted them like plague. One nigh they assembled in a dark room. There, they discussed the ways and means by which they could get better of the cat. The older rats said that they could not harm the cat. Thev hoped that, some day, the cat would become so fat and lazy that she would not be able to hunt them.</span><br />

Then one little mouse came out with a bright suggestion. He said, “We cannot kill the cat. We cannot run away like cowards. But we can put a bell round her neck. This bell would ring and announce her movements well in time, and we would have enough time to run back to our holes.”

This suggestion was greeted with a shout of approval. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> Once a poor woodcutter was felling a tree on a river bank. His axe slipped from his hand and fell into the deep river. The poor man began to cry, for he used to earn his livelihood by cutting trees with his axe. Now that his axe was lost he did not know what to do. He had no money to buy a new one and this made him cry even more bitterly.

By chance the god Mercury came there.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">He asked the woodcutter why he was crying. The poor fellow looked up and told him about his misfortune. Mercury jumped into the river and came up with an axe in his hand. It was not the woodcutter’s axe but one made of gold.

He gave it to the woodcutter who refused to take it and said, “This is not my axe.” Mercury, no doubt, knew it already. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He once again plunged into the river and brought out a silver axe. The woodcutter again refused to take it. He said that his was an iron axe . He did not want to cheat and claim what was not his. The river god jumped into the river for the third time and came out with an iron axe. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The woodcutter recognized it and gratefully took it.
 The god was greatly impressed by the honesty of that poor man who had rejected a fortune by refusing to claim what was not his own. So Mercury gave the two precious axes to the woodcutter as a reward for his honesty, and went away. </span><br />
