<h2 style="text-align: left;">  Discuss the element of humour and absurdity in “The Bear”.
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span></h2><p><span style="font-size: large;">When 
we go through the play “The Bear", we find that it is a farce. A farce 
is full of many absurd situations which make the readers laugh. There 
are three main characters in the play and they all make us laugh with 
their absurd comments. There are also many absurd situations. </span><br /></p><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-size: large;">When the 
play starts, we see that Luka is advising Popova to leave her mourning 
and go out to see her neighbours. However, his way of advising her is 
very absurd. He gives the examples of cats, midges, and spiders. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We 
simply laugh at these examples. Popova looks at the photograph of her 
husband and calls him a ‘bad child’. The word ‘bad child' makes us 
laugh.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">When Popova refuses to give Smirnov 
the money, he says, “I have not the pleasure of being either your 
husband or your finance, so please don’t make scenes.” These remarks are
 very funny and absurd and we laugh at them. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">When Popova accepts the 
challenge of duel from Smirnov, he says that he will bring her down like
 a chicken. The word ‘chicken’ is very funny.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We
 find the most comic and absurd situation in the play when Popova brings
 her husband’s revolvers and asks Smirnov to teach her how to fire. This
 is very absurd that she asks her enemy to teach her how to fire. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It is 
also very absurd that Smirnov starts teaching her. What a funny and 
absurd situation it is! He not only teaches her how to fire, but he also
 tells her the prices of different revolvers. Another situation is very 
funny when Popova changes her mind repeatedly. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">At one time, she asks him
 to leave and at another asks him to stay.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">From
 the above discussion, we can conclude that it is a farce and there are 
many comic and absurd elements in the play. The writer has created 
comedy through funny comments and absurd</span><br />

How does Emily Dickinson view death in "Because I Could Not Stop For Death"?<br />
Mortality is probably the major theme in this poem. It’s all about the 
speaker’s attitude toward her death and what the actual day of her 
death. Dickinson paints a picture of the day that doesn't seem too far 
from the death. The speaker is not scared of death at all and seems to 
accept it.<br />
Emily has beautifully described 
the approaching of death who is good-natured and civilized. The poem can
 be real as an expression of the poetess’ fear of death. Every person, 
whether religious or not, always desires to live longer keeping death at
 distance as long as possible with the approach of old age one feels 
fear of approaching of death. Drive in the coach and immortality are 
also elements of basic fear. As the setting sun loses its light, in the 
same way, a young man loses his strength in old age and finally reaches 
the grave. The description of setting sun, the grave and journey all 
fill our hearts with fear. Fear hovers over us from the very beginning 
of the poem till end.<i><b> </b></i><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">“After Apple-Picking" is about picking apples, but with its ladders 
pointing "toward heaven still," with its great weariness, and with its 
rumination on the harvest, the coming of winter, and inhuman sleep, the 
reader feels certain that the poem harbous some “ulteriority.” </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">“Final
 sleep" is certainly one interpretation of the "long sleep” that the 
poet contrasts with human sleep. The sleep of the woodchuck is the sleep
 of winter, and winter, in the metaphoric language of seasons, has 
strong associations with death. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Hints of winter are abundant: The scent 
of apples is “the essence of winter sleep”; the water in the trough 
froze into a “pane of glass”; the grass is “hoary" </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">(i.e., frosty,
 or Frosty). Yet is the impending death destructive or creative? The 
harvest of apples can be read as a harvest of any human effort—study, 
laying bricks, writing poetry, etc.—and this poem looks at the end of 
the harvest. It is concluded that poem, “After Apple-Picking” traces the
 journey from conscious to subconscious. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"> The poet 
laments over the busy life of modem man who is running after material 
pursuits. Modem man is too busy to enjoy the beauties of nature around 
him. He is so mucn absorbed in his work that he cannot find time to 
appreciate the natural charm which God has provided him. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The poet says 
that it is sad that we have no time to see beautiful and charming scenes
 of nature. Leisure is a mild satire on the modem computerized and 
mechanical life. Man cannot enjoy the natural beauty because he is 
worried about his worldly problem. Man is helpless against problems, 
difficulties and worries of life. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He works from morning till evening to fulfil his desires and wishes to make his life comfortable. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">No
 doubt, it is difficult to find care-free time in this industrial and 
commercial age but in spite of all the engagements and activities, man 
can still enjoy the natural beauty around him. The important 
prerequisite is that we must change our attitudes. We must develop 
aesthetic sense in us and must educate ourselves how to enjoy the 
natural beauty.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> We must team to ge pleasure from ordinary objects of 
nature. We must think that after all we are human beings having 
passions, emotions, likes, dislikes and ambitions. We must reduce or 
minimize our lust for wealth. We must be contented with our present 
position. We must think that we are human beings not robots. We should 
bring change in our day-to- day life to get some free time for happiness
 and pleasure. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">God has blessed us with a lot of natural objects 
and beauties of nature around us free of cost. We need no money to buy 
these natural beauties. We can make our life delightful and colourful by
 enjoying these physical charms. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">We must think that happiness always 
comes bit by bit and it never comes in bulk. So, we agree with the poet 
that modern man is busy in material pursuits of life but we can enjoy 
the natural delights by changing our attitude by developing our 
aesthetic sense and</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">educating ourself, we can enjoy the natural 
beauties blessed by God Almighty. It is concluded that leisure can be 
helpful in rejuvenating life because if a man becomes a beast of burden,
 he loses all charms of life. </span><br />

<span> </span></span></span></i></h1><p><span style="font-size: large;">Gloria Emerson was a weak woman. She worked in a newspaper. She had a
 bad back and uncertain ankle. But she wanted to do something great that
 would  surprise others. So she decided to take a plunge from a 
parachute. She joined a training club at Orange. She was timid and 
physically weak. Everyone was expecting that she must harm herself. </span><br /></p><div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<span style="font-size: large;">Finally,
 the day came when she was about to plunge from the parachute. She was 
so excited and nervous as well. She wanted to go to bathroom before her 
jumping but she could not because of her costume. She was looking 
strange in jumping costume. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">At last she jumped. She felt like a leaf. 
She enjoys the waves of air. She saw the beautiful colours of land that 
never was expressed. <br />
The earth looked beautiful and very colorful 
to her. But she was 
getting nearer and nearer to her destination.  </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">At last , she landed on a
 sandpit.   Gloria Emerson was taken to see James Gavin. Now 
everybody was happy and surprised at her bold act.She did not want to land but she had to. She 
enjoyed her experience very much. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">And
 she proved herself a brave lady. It is proved that women are equal to 
men in all fields of life .Gloria Emerson  was the least suitable person
 for a parachute jumping. But she did that work with passion and courage
 and made every one surprise. She was a brave lady a courageous woman. 
No doubt 
that during all her venture, she could not focus on her feelings but  
she enjoyed this important mission of her life.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">This essay highlights the importance of tolerance promoting peaceful 
co-existence in the world.. Forster says that everybody is talking about
 reconstruction, architects, contractors, international commissioners, 
marketing board, etc., want to rebuild the cities and politicians and 
statesmen want to build a new world order or a new western civilization.
 But there is a famous text: </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Except the lord build the house they labour in vain who built it. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Forster
 says that if people want to reconstruct a new world they must be 
inspired by the proper spirit and there must be the proper spirit in 
people whom they are working. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">A sound foundation for the creation of new
 world is a sound state of mind. According to the famous historian Dr. 
Toynbee: Unless we have a sound state of mind and a right psychology, we
 cannot construct or reconstruct anything that will endure. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">People
 do not, at present mind to live in the ugly house. They demand comfort 
but they are indifferent to civic beauty. People do not have any 
aesthetic sense All the people agree on this point that there most be a 
sound state of mind before diplomacy or economics or trade conferences 
can work.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Now the question is what is that proper spirit or what is the sound state of mind. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">According
 to some people that state of mind is love. According to Forster, love 
is greater force in private life but it does not work in public affairs,
 tolerance is needed for the reconstruction of civilization. It has been
 tried throughout history.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> But it has always failed. The idea is 
that men must love one another.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> Forster also gives views of different 
people from history. People like St. Paul and Dante have not been in 
favour of tolerance. But great men like Ashoka, Eramus, Montaigne, John 
Locke, and Goethe have recommended tolerance. Tolerance should not be 
taken as weakness but a virtue</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Bearbohm in his essay, “Hosts and Guests” expresses his views about hosts and guests.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">He
 says that mankind may be divided into two classes i.e., host and guest.
 According to him, in every human being, one of the two instincts 
dominates. Those who have the negative or passive instinct to accept it 
are the guests. There are many guests as there are hosts.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The 
writer says that our deepest instincts, bad or good are those which we 
share with the rest of the animate creation. The difference between host
 and guest is based on circumstances or temperament. When a man asks the
 other to dine with him in a restaurant and the other agrees, one 
pays-for the food and the other enjoys it, they are host and the guest 
according to their role. </span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; margin-bottom: 0in; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: large;"> Bearbohm <span style="line-height: 150%;">thinks that mankind can be divided generally into
two categories: hosts and guests. The difference  between the two is not
only circumstantial and particular but also temperamental and general. Every human
being has either the positive and active instinct of being a host or the
negative and passive instinct of being a guest. Hosts are those who have the
natural instinct to serve others and guests are those who to be served.</span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></span></div>

of hospitality developed slowly as human beings were organized into groups and
the history of hospitality is full of painful incidents, the writer tells us
that though the Israelites were considered to be the salt of the world, yet the
treachery of the Jael was condemnable. </span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></span></div>

hospitality is proverbial. It was Scotland that first formed hospitality
 with
the basic principal that the guest must be honored .</span></span>

<span style="font-size: large;">

<span style="line-height: 150%;">The
 writer says that it is conventional for
the rich to give and for the poor to take as a result of which the rich 
usually
become hosts and the poor  become the guests. But this cannot be
regarded as a rule because neither all the poor are guests nor all the 
rich are
a the hosts. Most of the time i\It is simply the matter of one’s’ 
temperament. A host as a  guest is far worse than the guest as a host. </span><span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span> 
<span style="line-height: 150%;">like other boys he himself was a guest by nature but he often
entertained his friends at the restau rant and was always afraid of the shortage
of the money in his pocket. He feels that the guests must be obliged to
their hosts but many times it is not so. Many guests  are often ungrateful
to their hosts. </span></span><span style="font-size: large;">In every human being one or 
the other of these two instincts is predominant: the active or positive 
instinct to offer hospitality, the negative or passive instinct to 
accept it. And either of these instincts is so significant of character 
that one might well say Kina is divisible into two great classes: hosts 
and guests. </span><br />

Man dies when he loses hope”. It is the hope that keeps us alive. For
 eighty-four days, old man had not caught any fish. A young man, Monolin
 had shared his bad fortune but after the fortieth luckless day, the 
boy’s father told his son to go in another boat. From that day, Santiago
 worked alone. Each morning he rowed his skiff into the Gulf stream 
where the big fish were. Each evening he came empty-handed. <br />
The 
boy loved the old man and pitied him. Manolin had no money of his own. 
Santiago had enough fresh bait for his lines. The old man accepted his 
kindness with humility that was like a quiet kind of pride. At night 
alone in his shack, Santiago dreams of lions on the beaches of Africa 
where he had gone on a sailing ship years before. He no longer dreamed 
of his dead wife. <br />
On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago rowed out of 
the harbour in the cool dark before dawn. After leaving the land behind 
him, he set his lines. Two of his baits were fresh tunas the boy had 
given him, as well as sardines to cover his hooks. The lines went 
straight into deep dark water. As the sun rose, he saw other boats in 
towards shore, which was only a low green line on the sea.<br />
A 
hovering man of war showed him where dolphins were chasing some flying 
fish, but his shoal was moving too fast and too fast away. The bird 
circled again. This time Santiago saw tuna leaping in the sunlight. A 
small one took the hook on his stem line. Hauling the quivering fish 
aboard, the old man thought it a good omen. <br />
Toward noon, a marlin
 started nibbling at the bait which was one hundred fathom down. The 
fish did not surface instead, it began to tow the skiff to the 
northwest. Although he was alone and no longer strong, he Had his skill 
and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to tire. The old 
man shivered in the cold that came after sunset. When something took one
 of his remaining baits, he cut the line with his sheath knife.<br />
Once
 the fish lurched suddenly, pulling Santiago forward on his face and 
cutting his cheek. By dawn, his left hand was stiff and cramped. The 
fish headed northward there was no land in sight Another strong tug on 
the line sliced Santiago's right hand. Hungry, he cut strips from the 
tuna and chewed them slowly while he waited for the sun to warm him and 
ease his cramped fingers. That morning the fish jumped.<br />
On seeing 
it leap, Santiago knew he had hooked the biggest marlin he had ever 
seen. Then the fish went under and turned toward the east Santiago 
dragged sparingly from his water bottle during the hot afternoon. <br />
In
 spite of all hardships, the old man never loses hs hope and continued 
his struggle to achieve his goat We can say that novel is full of hope 
elements. As Santiago says, "1 will try it as tong as I have the oars 
and the short dub and the tiler". <br />On
 another occasion, when the martin coukl pun the skiff downward into the
 water, the old man was very careful and says."We are joined together 
and have been since noon And no one to help. And no one to help either 
of us I wish I could see him to know what I have against me.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Earnest Hemingway has depicted the sea as a living character in the 
novel. The Old Man and The Sea. He has attributed many characteristics 
of a man to the sea which prove it to be a living character in the 
novel. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The old man always thinks of the sea as feminine because in 
Spanish poetry the sea is treated as a woman. People call her La mar 
means feminine in Spanish when they love her. Santiago thinks that some 
of the younger fishermen call the sea as el mar which is masculine. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">They
 speak her as a contestant or a place or even an enemy. So different 
people call her by different names but as living character.The sea also 
plays a role of a teacher in the novel. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">It teaches the fishermen 
how to lead their lives and earn their livelihood.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"> It teaches the old 
man how to ask help from God at the hard time of life. It proves to be a
 moral teacher for the old man. The old man loved the sea because it 
housed his friends and enemies. The sea is as colourful and beautiful as
 land for him. The man thinks it to be his home. He says that one is 
never alone at the sea because the living creatures provide company.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">The
 sea is also a source of livelihood for the fishermen and to every 
fisherman, it gives his share of fish to feed and live on. It supplies 
livelihood to fishermen as a benevolent father. Fishing is a trade or 
industry which depends on the sea. Santiago and other fishermen living 
in Havana depend on the sea for their livelihood. So we can say that the
 sea is a living character. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;">The dreams of lions have great significance in Santiago's life. They 
remind him of his glorious youth. The old man dreams of lions when he is
 in great crisis or trouble. He derives courage, strength, will-power, 
inspiration and hope from these dreams. Dreams of lions sustain him to 
live and fight with new spirit and gusto. That’s why the writer says: </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">“He
 no longer dreamed of great fish, storms, women, great events, fights, 
contests of strength nor his wife. He only dreamed of lions and places.”
 We have three references to the dreams of lions. He dreams before going
 to the fishing expedition. Because he has caught no fish for 84 days. 
He derives hope and courage. Second, during the fishing expedition, when
 he is dead tired, he dreams of lions to console himself.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Third, 
when he comes back after losing his battle with sharks, he dreams of 
lion again. The old man dreams of lions to forget his sufferings, 
agonies, sorrows and torture. These dreams of lions fill his soul with 
new spirit and valour. He gets ready to face wild forces of nature. The 
dreams of lions reveal the optimistic nature of the old man. These 
dreams of lions also give us message of hope and courage. Man should not
 be pessimist because: </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">“Every doud has a silver lining. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">“In the sea of agonies, there are also green island.” </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;">So, these dreams of lions inject hope and courage into the veins of Santiago and fill his soul with spirit. </span><br />

is: “Educate the masters.’' Apparently, the right to education is a civil right,
but really, it is a political right as it safeguards them.</span></div>
