2. Answer (in 3-5 lines I sentences) the following any SIX questions from Book-I (Short Stories): 12
(I) Why did Harry want to go back to Earth?
Harry wanted to go back to Earth because he felt that Martian atmosphere did not suit him. Right from the beginning, he felt that at Mars he would lose his identity. He felt strange changes taking place in him, his wife and his children.
(ii) . Why did George give the pocket-book to his  employer?
George was not an educated man. He did not know how to read and write. As such, he could not read the name of the owner of the pocket-book. That is why, he gave it to his employer.
(iii) Why did Norma consider the tone and attitude of Mr.  Steward offensive?
ECE Norma did not like Mr. Steward's attitude because he was insisting unnecessarily. Moreover, his tone and language were rough. So Norma considered all this offensive.
(iv) What did happen to the boy when he tried to snatch the purse?
EGE. The boy came from behind her and tried to snatch the purse. As a result, its strap broke. The boy lost his balance and fell down. Then the woman caught him easily.
(v) What was the subject discussed at the club?
The subject discussed at the club was ‘success in life. Jorkens said that with determination, anything could be done but Terbut said that chance or opportunity was needed for success.
(vi) How did the quack try to cure the old woman?
The quack applied the same method to the swollen neck of the old woman that the camel-men had used to I their camel. He thought that every swollen throat could be ! cured like that. He tied a blanket round the neck of the old ' woman and hit her with a big hammer. The result was I unexpected for the quack. Instead of getting cure, the poor woman died instantly. 

(vii) Under what, circumstances the use of force can be justified?

You can use force for saving someone’s life. As that l doctor who came to inspect a little sick girl but she behaved in a silly way. The doctor also lost self-control but then he decided to use force to see her throat. Just to do his moral duty, the doctor opened the child’s mouth
forcefully. .
(viii) What was the advice given by Nushirvan to his people? 

 He advised the people to be kind and just. He asked them not to take anything from anyone without paying the price.
(ix) Why did the farmers want to kill the locusts?
The farmers want to kill the locusts because they destroyed their crops unexpectedly. Like all farmers, they were badly shaken by this destruction.

(i) How did the Second Man accuse the First Man of lying?
When the Second Man looked in the room, he saw a man and a girl in the room. When he entered the room, he saw only the First Man. The. First Man tried to hide the presence of the girl from the Second Man who accused the first man of lying.
(ii) What were the circumstances that forced her to leave her car?
Ans:The girl had to leave her car on the road because she had run out of gas.
(iii) Why didn’t she accompany the Second Man?
At first, the girl was frightened of the Second Man. She took him to be a killer. She had a misconception that he was the killer who was chasing her.
(iv) How does Kreton prove his extraordinary powers?
Kreton proves his extraordinary powers by showing I that he can hear the mind of the people and he claims that he knows all the stages of the human history. The people of his planet do not die. No one can inflict harm on him or his spaceship. His knowledge of science is superior to that of human beings.
(v) How does Kreton impress General Powers?
Kreton impresses General Powers by telling him that there is no instrument to drive his car. Then he erects a wall round his car without using any device. He also impresses General Powers by telling him
that he can hear ihis thoughts.
(vi) What type of life do you foresee in year 5000? 

in the year 5000, it is likely that man will have learnt to live and let live. He by that time will have overcome the forces of the outer space.
(vii) What is Harry’s philosophy?
Harry’s philosophy is "A way to live” and that is to take it easy way.
(viii) What is Miss McCutcheon looking for? How does she feel about the children of the town?
Miss McCutcheon is very keen to serve humanity. She believes that teaching young ones is a great cause. Miss McCutchean is not happy to see that the children do not want to study at all. They like to play and roam about in the streets.

(i) How do the sheep-dogs react at the arrival of the Night Mail?
The sheep-dogs remain silent at the arrival of the
Night Mail because they are used to listen to her noise.
(ii) How does the poet plan to spend the small period of his remaining life of fifty years?
In the remaining fifty years of his life, he is determined to go to the woodland more often to enjoy the glorious cherry tree. He is determined to quench his aesthetic thirst by gazing at beautiful boughs hung with snow.
(iii) What fruits does the writer mention in the poem “In the Street of Fruit Stalls”?

The poet mentions melon, guava, mandarin and pyramid. He describes fruits of different size, shape
and flavours.
(iv) What did the traveller see in the desert?

The traveller saw two huge bodiless legs made of stone standing in a desert. Near these legs, there was lying the broken body of a man sinking in the sand. It was the statue of a king, Ozymandias.
(v) When does the life of a man become poor? (Leisure)  

Ans:  In the present age, people are very busy. They do not have any time for their personal comfort. They are crazy about worldly things. In their struggle to becomejich, they are completely exhausted and make their life poor.
(vi) What is the effect of love?
Love changes thorns: into roses, and it changes vinegar into a drink. Love changes punishment into reward. Through love burning fire, becomes joyful light, sickness becomes health and a proud king becomes as humble as a slave.

 Reference:
These lines have been taken from the poem "A Tale of Two Cities" written by John Peter.
Context:
The poem is a tribute to the people of Japan. The people of two cities of Japan passed through the most cruel period of their lives, when the atomic bomb exploded and destroyed the glory of their culture and civilization. Both human beings and objects of nature were the victims of atomic bomb. The people suffered all the pains and pangs patiently and boldly, and did not lose heart. They, with their great will and determination, again rose to the heights as an economic power from the ashes. The poet also condemns the cruelty of Americans that they violated the human rights. Explanation:
These lines explain the intensity of explosions. 

The poet says that there was not an eye of a man that could look at the destruction caused by the dropping of atomic bombs on the two cities of Japan. The explosion was so severe that it was impossible for anybody to see it. The two cities, which were at the height of their splendour and grandeur, were turned into debris in no time. Angers and furies make a person unable to think whether he is doing right or wrong. The two cities fell a victim to same moment of anger and fury.
(b) Punctuate the following extract from Book-1: (5)

She stared at it for a long time before taking the key from its envelope and removing the glass dome. She stared at the button. How ridiculous, she thought. All this furore over a meaningless button.
