Oscar wild has created a very beautiful world in the story.It is a world like fairy tales.Although he wrote this story for the children with a moral lesson yet it has much importance for the adults also.To convey his message to his young readers,the winter has created a very beautiful imaginary

world in it. This is a world where swallows speak. 
They can  weep on the plight of the living.
We see in the story that a swallow is going to Egypt because the winter season has set in Europe. Winter is killing for the tiny birds like swallows. All the companions of swallow have already flown to Egypt. At night while flying to his destination he sat on a statue of a happy prince who is weeping. When asked, the prince tells his story that when he was alive he was called happy prince because he never knew the cares and worries of the poor people. 
He passed his whole time in enjoyments but after his death the people made a statue with gold and other ornaments and fixed it on a high place where he could see all the miseries of the poor people. But he could not help them. He requests swallow to take the precious ornaments from his body to help the needy. Swallow agrees and helps the poor. 
The statue is becoming ugly day by day as all the decoration is being ripped off to help the poor. On the other hand, swallow is growing weak day by day as there is cold and nothing to eat. The day comes when swallow dies and the statue is completely an ugly thing.
The statue is removed and melted but his heart is made of lead which is not melted and thrown on a heap of rubbish with the dead body of swallow. God asks angels to bring the loveliest things from the world and they present the heart of happy prince and the dead body of swallow. God orders that happy prince and swallow will remain in the heaven.
