2. Answer (in 3-5 lines / sentences) the following any SIX questions from Book-I (Short Stories): 12
(i) Why did the old man take the steep path?
Ans: The old man was a heart patient. The doctors told him not to do any work but he could not help climbing the hills. So he built easy paths to reach the top of the mountain. But when his health improved he built rather steep path to go there. When he climbed the mountain with his son, he took the steep path to prove that he was still energetic and healthy.
(ii) What circumstances did the Bittering family face?
The Bittering family found the climatic conditions V extremely unfavourable when they landed the Mars. The wind was hot and high. There was fog at night. Summer y burnt the canals dry. Martian virus changed their appearance. The vegetables looked strange.
(iii) What made Hubert shameful?
I tidb’ Hurbert felt very much ashamed because people B did not believe him when he said that he had not picked up James’ pocketbook from the road. He felt more \ ashamed when they said that he was lying.
(iv) What is the lesson that the story “The Reward” teaches?
Ans: The "Reward” teaches us to work and labour hard. lt is a reality that hard work is the key to success. It paves the way to heaven. The world history bears witness to this" fact. With determination and continuous efforts, one can shine brightly in the life.
(v) Why did Della and Jim want to exchange the gifts?
Della and Jim loved each other passionately. They had very modest means of living. Both wanted to exchange gifts on the eve of Christmas and they sold their costly things to buy gifts. They had firm faith that love is more sacred and precious than all things. Exchange of gifts strengthens their bond of love.

The Girl could not describe the Killer because It was raining. She was frightened and confused. She had not seen him clearly as well.
(ii) What was the reason that the girl did not accompany second man?
The girl did not accompany the second man because she was suspicious about him. She thought that he was the killer and had been chasing her before she reached the bus station.
(iii) What did the girl see in the flash of lightning?
The girl was walking along the road when she saw a car in a flash of lightning. She saw the dead body of a woman. The hair of the.dead body was being dragged in the mud.
(iv) Describe the purpose of Kreton’s visit.
The purpose of Kreton’s visit to the Earth is merely a pleasure trip. He is also interested in the study of the civilization of man. He claims to have come to take the charge of the whole world.
(v) Can the people of the earth compete with those of Kreton?
i- Unlike the people on Kreton’s planet, the people of earth have little knowledge of universe. They cannot see kiture. They are unable to control the universe. For these reasons, the people of the earth cannot compete with the people of Kreton’s planet.
(vi) How does Kreton impress General Powers?
Ans: Kreton impresses General Powers by telling him that j there is no
instrument to drive his car. Then he erects a wall around his car
without using any device. He also i impresses General Powers by telling
him that he can hear his thoughts.
(vii) Who is the writer of the play “The Oyster and the Pearl” and where does the play take place?
The play takes place in a barber’s shop. Harry van.
Deusen is the owner of this shop. It is situated on the small seaside town called O.K.-by-the-Sea, California, population 909.
(viii) How much did Harry pay for his barber shop?
How long has he been in O.K-by-the-Sea?
Harry bought the barber’s shop for seventy-five dollars.
He told the owner of the shop that he had eighty dollars with him and
the owner sold him the shop for 75 dollars. Harry has been running the
shop for the last - twenty-five years.

(i) Give the central idea of the poem “Night Mail”.
The poem, “Night Mail” conveys to lis -the idea of performing the duties regularly and without discrimination.

Ans: The qualities of the Sindhi woman are as:

Ans: The message, the poet conveys in his poem “Ozymandias" is that pride hath a fall and all worldly glory is short-lived. Nothing is permanent in this world. Man should never take pride in his achievements.
(iv) Why does the poet consider hollow men useless for a nation?
The poet calls modem men as hollow men because their activities have become mechanical. They are no more real men. They are like robots. They worship money, power and status. For these reasons, they are hollow men and women.
(v) What makes one entangled in love?
When man comes to know the purpose of his creation, he gets entangled in love for his God and fellow-men.
(vi) What is the effect of man’s good relations with the earth and the Lords? (The Delight Song)
The effect of man’s good relations with the earth and the lords is wholesome. It keeps him alive and active.

These lines have been taken from the poem 'The Feed” written by Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi.
Context:
These are the last lines of the poem. The poet tells that a mother-sparrow has ten children. They need food as they are very small. The mother has only one grain of nillet in her beak. She has to feed them all with it Explanation: In these lines, the poet says that the mother-sparrow las learnt how to feed her ten young sparrows with only one [rain of millet. She breaks the grain of millet in as many lumber as the babies are to feed them. The poets conveys Jo us the idea that the human beings should also divide our purees like the sparrow to feed the poor and needy.
