I want to draw the attention of the public and; authorities to the traffic problems on the city roads. <br />The unmanageable traffic is one of the biggest problems of Lahore. The traffic on the roads is very congested. In peak  hours, like school, college, office and business hours, the roads are jamrped with traffic. The atmosphere gets smoky because of the carbon emitted from various kinds of vehicles. All'ihis rush and hurry results in accidents. People are delayed and they fail to reach their destinations" <br />There are'certain factors which create this problem. Most of the roads in Lahore are narrow, and they too are insufficient in number for the flow of traffic. During the last decade, the city of Lahore has expanded beyond limits. People need transportation to reach their places of business, offices or work. The number of buses, cars, auto-rickshaws^ and trucks has been accordingly increased to meet this demand. <br />This, problem can be solved to a great extent, if certain steps are taken in time. The existing roads/should be widened and repaired at regular intervals. New roads should be constructed to lessen the burden on the existing roads. To avoid the jams on the crossings, overhead bridges should be z built. Through pre-planned schemes, the flow of traffic should be distributed on various roads. The principle of one-way traffic should be imposed on busy roads. Victory stands were beautifully decorated to make the winners feel proud.-There were many events like races, jumps, throws, hop skip-jump, basketball, tennis, musical chairs, etc. There were obstacle and walking races too. The most popular were the marble and spoon in/th'e mouth and sack races. Races were also arranged for the'’staffteachers and parents. The participating students were divided according to age. Flags of different colours were fluttering al.l around the « ground. The sports commenced at 9 a.m Vyitljy drill and march past. The participants lined up before the start of. every event and they were cheered by the spectators. <br />The winners were given medals and cups. Unsuccessful contestants were given participation certificates. Our principal delivered the closing speech. Finally, our annual sports day was concluded with the final march past. Therefore, it becomes clear that in order to function efficiently, both the media and the judiciary must be independent of any outside influences that may attempt to change information or legal decisibns. However, the roles of these two institutions do not end here. The judiciary is also responsible for protecting the freedom of the press. At the same time, the press is responsible for reporting facts and events in a  manner that helps the judiciary. <br />Without freedom of the media, no government can be  considered ‘of the people, by the people ancl for the people’. Unfortunately, the past few years have seen increasing curbs, <br />direct or indirect, on the media and its ability to report These curbs have come in the form of harassment, threats and intimidation and are having increasingly disastrous consequences for the dissemination of unbiased information. Unless this trend is reversed, we may see some of the most powerful democracies in the world collapsing soon. <br />The media has a responsibility to act 'as check and balance institution for the administration and the government It is the media that raises its voice against social ills, malpractices, corruption and oppression. It is also the press that gathers, verifies and distributes events, facts and information that allow the people of a country'to make sound judgments. However, none of this is possible if the media itself is silenced or if its voice is only allowed when those in power permit <br />This is not mere speculation. Time and time again, recent history has proven that censorship of the press is one of the most common features of a dictatorship. The censorship may not even be direct or obvious at first A government may often start by discrediting the news media and what is being reported. It may stridently reinforce the notion that the media cannot be trusted by undermining the news and facts that media presents to the public. This is when the media begins to exercise self­censorship to avoid outrage manufactured by the government. <br />There can be no doubt that a strong and free media is crucial to the functioning of any state. However,' like any other right, the right to freedom of expression must be exercised with caution because it does more harm than good. Unfortunately, news media depends on ratings to generate revenue. The most important point of the essay is the depiction of the heaps of dead bodies, carcasses and remains of the little whistling birds that had been the result, of the cruel winter with its frost and storm. Factories and power looms are being closed down and the people do not have , any idea what to do= There are many factor^ which have contributed towards the energy crisis and the government has failed miserably in solving this problem of load-shedding.. <br />Pakistan has been unable to build any major dam iri the country. The population has been increasing very rapidly since 2000 and no government has started the work on the proposed Kalabagh Dam in the region. As the population has been increasing, the electricity demand has also increased but the supply has remained the same. Lack of education has made people ignorant and heartless. People do hot care to turn off the; light in the room, they are riot sitting and they regard it a thing of pride to overuse electricity. <br />There are 'three other major reasons for the energy crisis; They are circu lar debt, mismanagement of resources and , corruption. A significant amount of electricity in Pakistan is produced by oil. Failure to pay{he oil companies results in the low supply which results in energy crisis. The power plants, operating in Pakistan, are either not operating on their full capacity or they are not even running We all talk about the corruption done by the government officials.vbut we never talk about, the corruption done the citizens who are perceived as innocent Pakistanis.</p><p> At least by 27% of Pakistanis' pre -either„not giving the electricity bill or are bribing the officials to'reduce the amount of the bill. <br />There have been serious consequences of the energy crisis. Everyone in Pakistan has been badly affected by the energy crisis; There was a common belief that only the poor, people in Pakistan suffer, but energy crisis has also destroyed the lives of the rich people. Students are not able to learn or concentrate on their studies as the attention is diverted because of the 12-hour load-shedding. Industrialists have started relocating their industries to Bangladesh as it is no longer feasible for them to run their businesses in Pakistan. </p><p>People belonging to the middle class are having great difficulty in finding the jobs because all the major businesses are either shutting down or making their employees surplus. It is the duty of both government and the citizens to use electricity with care and denounce all those people who are involved in this corruption. Government, with its resources, can punish all the culprits severely so that a precedent is set and no one could ever gain dare to steal electricity. <br /> </p>

All this caused huge economic losses to our country and other countries, immediate suffering to the Afghans and a war situation in South Asia. <br />A terrorist organization operating in a country usually gets money and weapons from foreign governments to promote state terrorism. It also joins hands with forceful groups or parties opposed to the government inside the country. <br />Nations or big communities in a country use terrorist methods to gain greater freedom or independence. <br />The causes of terrorism in different parts of the world should be removed on an emergency basis with the help of the world powers and the UN. The chief causes are injustices done to the Palestinians in the Middle East, to the people of Kashmir <br />in South Asia, to the Chechens in South Russia and to the poor people of the Third World in east, west, south and north. <br />Terrorism needs to be checked very carefully. The different governments should force all the people illegally present in their countries to leave. They should arrange to stop the illegal flow of arms and, money from abroad. They should have effective secret services, which can report all kinds of terrorist plans. The deployment of the police or the army on a large scale can be discussed in the mass media and in the elected assemblies. <br />Terrorism has a great effect on the people living in a society. At least 60,000 people have been killed in Pakistan due to tenor attacks. Since the beginning of the war on terror, the economic losses have been measured at 120 billion dollars. After the incident of 9/11, Pakistani and Afghani people are the victims of terrorism. Pakistan has lost 83 billion dollars plus 60,000 people’s lives, including civilians and armed forces, due to the war against tenorism. People stay home due to terrorism and they are afraid to meet any unknown person. These things destroy their social life. Due to terrorism, the Western countries have started hating the immigrants, especially from Muslim community, because label of terrorism has been attached with Muslims. The terrorists attack.mostly on religious place like mosques, churches, and temples and on public places. The main purpose of terrorism is to harm people mentally and socially. <br />In recent times, Pakistani Army is the only army in the world who has defeated terrorism by doing operations like Radd-ut-Fassad and Zarb-e-Azb. Belief in spirits, ghosts and witches; the cries of certain birds like owl and ravens and- , mewing of cats are. superstitions followed all over the globe. It is also a common belief that when comets are seen, they cause the death of great man. <br />People in the West still regard ‘13’ as an unlucky number because at the Last Supper, Jesus dined with his twelve ' disciples and was later crucified. Salt was spilled on the table on which they dined and, therefore, even now spilling of salt is considered unlucky. They consider Friday as an inauspicious day to. start a new work. They also believe that going under a ladder brings ill-luck.  <br />India is the home of a number of superstitions. A cat a • crossing one’s path, the sight of a Brahmin, a sneeze or when 1 someone interrupts or calls while one is going out are all *, considered to be bad signs. The hooting of an owl and the howling of a dog are considered to be signs of death and danger. Contracting chickenpox is considered to be the anger <br />of a goddess. So, the goddess is appeased with offerings. When people build a new house or if it is a beautiful house, they hang an earthen pot with an ugly face painted on it on the facade of,their house. Owners of new vehicles hang women's braids at the back of their vehicles to vards off evil eyes. <br />Certain hours and days are considered inauspicious. <br />People consult astrologers and priests to know the auspicious 4 hours and days to start their work, projects and journeys., <br />Likewise, the time and date of marriage, inauguration and foundation-laying ceremonies are fixed according to the advice ‘‘of astrologers and the position of the planets and stars. <br />Some superstitions are supposed to bring good luck or happiness. People believe that meeting a Shudra on one's way for some work brings success. If one finds a horse-shoe and brings it home it could bring luck to the finder and the family. Breaking of crockeiy on the occasion of marriage ceremony is regarded as auspicious. <br />Superstitions can Sometimes, lead to horrifying crimes. Women, who were suspected of practicing witchcraft were tied and burnt alive. Joan of Arc was burnt to death because she was regarded by the Englishmen as a witch. Child sacrifices are made to please gods.'y;. ; i <br />In some cases, there are scientific reasons behind superstitions^ For example, dogs are very sensitive to changes around them. They become restless before the onset of a natural calamity and one cannot reject .these superstitions; which are backed by scientific reasoning. In South India, people apply sandalwood paste on their foreheads. There is, also a scientific reasoning behind it. Sandalwood keeps the forehead cool. <br />The world today is governed by science. That is why, literature embraces social, economic, political,. religious, psychological, educational <br /> problems of life. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Complexities of life provide variety of themes to the literary men. A short-story writer cannot close his eyes to the ugly societal spots. Likewise, a novelist is influenced' by the social, political, economic currents of contemporary life. A poet too ’gives vent to feelings of anguish through his poetry. Changing realities'of diverse nature seek expression in contemporary creative works of art. <br />Ghalib's poetry, Shakespeare's dramas are meant for all ages as they , represent universal truths of life. Saadat Hasan  Minto - a great Urdu': short-story writer, will ever be remembered ifor his literary aesthetic excellence as reflected in his stories. ‘The New Constitution’ even today is as valid as it was before the creation of Pakistan. <br />Minto’s story ‘Open Up’ is as refreshing today as it was at the time of its publication some five decades back: Great literature, as observed earlier, is produced, when an artist,' coupled with aestheticism and i(nagination undergoes an experience of creativity. Saadat Hasan Minto by all standards domes up to this criterion. Ghulam Abbas is also another great Urdu short-story writer, who too satisfies the criterion irii question.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> The point to emphasise is that, the artist, be he a J playwright, a poet or a short-story writer, obseryes.life sharply in 1 its multifarious facets arid presents it in a way as to make it ah 1 object of aestheticism and pleasure. All great artists of the world 1 in the realms of poetry and prose pass through literary experience, a combination of imagination, aesthetic-cum-artistic excellence. <br />There are two distinct schools of thought, which stand for 1 art for art’s sake and art for life’s sake. The former aim-at pure a aesthetic pleasure of art as they believe that- if complex,  problems of life were to eriter into the realm of literature, these “ would lower down the aesthetic standards of art. Oscar Wilde is T a great exponent of art for art’s sake, whose novel, shOrt-sfories and dramas are replete with different life’s problems. He could not dwell in the ivory tower of aesthetic excellence of art, but  had to come down to project the earthly ugly realities of life. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">The writers of this school of thought could not ignore the problems of life, which found expression in their writings. Take the case Of Oscar. Wilde’s story “Nightingale and the Red Rose”, in which the author deals with the theme of artistic creation. The nightingale gives her heart’s, blood to redden the rose demanded by the beloved of a lover. Wheri the latter presents the rose flower to her, she just throws if in a casual manner on a road, whose petals are run over by the wheels of a cart. She had no appreciation for the rose flower which embodied the heart’s blood Aof the nightingale, as a rich lover had presented to - her precious .jewels. Oscar Wilde had to come out of the , aesthetic tower to deal with the social realities of life. ’ <br /><br />The other school of thought, namely art for life’s sake, J stands for social improvement, of course, the path of creativity remaining in tact. The followers of this school believe -that literature tor art’s sake, being divorced from life is just a sort of mental pleasure and a relaxation. Bertrand Russel, G.B. Shaw stand for iiterature%to serve life by pointing out the social . <br /><br />problems of their times. Likewise Minto, Ghulam Abbas and a host of other short-story writers believe in literature for life’s sake as their literary works expose social contradictions. Artists thus feel the pulse of societies in which they live and lash at the social contradictions in an artistic manner. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">Saadat Hasan Minto was criticised for promoting pornography in Urdu literature through his afsanas (short-stories). The reference is to his afsana (Thanda Gosht). Minto in defence said, “My only fault is that I expose the hollowness of society. I write with a white piece of chalk on a blackboard. The idea is to arouse the blackness of the board. I hold, a looking glass to show the ugliness of human/societal faces.” <br /><br />George Bernard Shaw is of the view that writers instead of going to the past, should have a rapport with the realities of their times. Although journalism can't be considered literature, yet G.B. He was satisfied with his fate. He used to say that * one day he would catch a big fish. His fish might be here or somewhere and later as we'know that his words came true and he was successful in catching a big marlin. He is the son of a fisherman. He goes on the sea with Santiago to learn fishing. When Santiago fails to hook any fish for 48 days, Manolin’s father sends him to another boat. But the boy goes to see Santiago very'often. He encourages him to go on the sea again. We can study his character under these features.. | Manolin’s love for the old man is very deep. His loVe is that of a* disciple for his master in the art of fishing. It is also the love of a son for an adopted father. He always helps him carry his lines,- gaff, harpoon and sails. He brings, for the old man beer, coffee, food and fish for baits. In the end, tie brings ointment for the injured hands of the old man. He sympathises. with him on his great loss. The old man always remembers the boy whenever he feels himself in trouble.  <br />Manolin is there in the story to heighten our sympathy for the old man. Through him, we come to know that the old man is. very poor. He lives in a small cottage. He has no money to buy a cast-net. Very often, he has no food to eat. He has no blanket to warm himself. At the beginning and end of the story, we look at Santiago admiringly; ... «, <br />Manolin is the symbol of Santiago's lost youth. Santiago looks at the boy and remembers the days when he was young. Through the agency of Manolin, the old man is able to recapture in his imagination the strength and confidence of his youth. When the old man is in trouble, he says, “I wish the boy were here.” By this sentence, he invokes the strength and courage of his youth. In the beginning, it is Manolin who encourages the old man to go again for fishing. In the end, it is the boy who consoles the old man. Manolin appears to be the only character who realizes the significance of the tragedy Santiago has just been through, as he breaks down and cries several times.</span>

Those who like to offer meal to others are hosts and those who like to enjoy the meal without <br />paying the bill are guests.</span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"> The writer says that the behaviour of these two categories of human beings is different' from each other. According to Beerbohm, the virtue of hospitality lies between miserliness and affectation. A miser does not spend  any money oh his friends and relatives. The character of Corin’s master in Shakespeare’s play is one such example. </span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;">On the other end of hospitality is the person, who is proud and wants to A show his wealth. His object is to impress the others and win admiration. The Roman general, Lucullus was fine example. <br />However, a good host stands between the two extremes.
