Ans:
“The Bear” is an interesting and humorous play about a Russian widow. The play is about the hypocrisy of the human being. There is a sudden change from hatred to love. The elements of hypocrisy cause laughter and fun. The husband of Popova has died and she is wearing a mourning dress. She is leading a life of complete loneliness. Smirnov - a landlord and retired army officer comes and the servant tells Popova that he asks to get back his 1,200 rubbles, which he has lent to her husband .Popova tells that she is very sad and he should come on another day. But he is insisted to get back the loan. Smirnov behaves rudely.
There arises a quarrel between! them. They both take a pistol and go to the garden! Popova seems to be very rigid but slowly and steadily! changes her responses. At last, Smirnov and Popova fall in love with each other. This shows that Popova is different in her inner and outer. She catches the attention because of the conflict in her personality.
