“Lights Out” dwells upon the power of sleep. Discuss
Ans: The poem is in the praise of sleep. Sleep is a gift of God. It provides us comforts and refreshes our tired limbs. It cures our miseries in a natural way. After our routine work, when we enter the valley of sleep, it provides us peace. We forget our disappointments, high ambitions and anxieties. The poet seems to be thankful to sleep which makes tired people to take rest. The poet thinks that sleep makes them unaware of ambitions and hatred. Sleep sooths all the passions of a man. The poet compares the sleep with death. The idea of sleep and death has been beautifully depicted in the poem.
Men are busy in their works, jobs and activities all the day and sleep is only a way to relax again. We find ourselves fresh after getting up. We cannot avoid to go into its immeasurable depths. The travellers travel all the day but a time comes when they sink down in this ocean. When sleep overpowers a man, no dearest face and no criticism on power worship. He was a hero of yesterday but now he is considered a traitor.
As for the situation of the Third World countries is concerned, the writer has aptly drawn the picture of such a political leader. People welcome their candidates warmly and shower the petals over them but after passing some time, they are fed up with the political leaders. Actually, the poverty is main factor in the Third World countries which is responsible for such events. We find many examples in this regard in many Third World countries.
Pakistan and India are the best examples in this concern. Many political leaders have been welcomed very warmly but after that they have been accused for having treason with the country. It is not considered the name of such leaders for some reasons but everybody knows well about them.
