Virginia Woolf has turned the ordinary to extraordinary in Eclipse. Discuss.
Ans:
Virginia Woolf is a famous English novelist, critic and essayist. She
possessed brilliant imaginative, creative intelligence and an
extraordinary sensibility to portrait the beautiful and charming aspect
of nature. In the eclipse, the writer has described the event
of the Solar eclipse viewed by the people of England. She has also one
of the spectators who had gathered to see the event. That is why her description
of the event is first rate. The people of London gathered at the Euston Railway Station. Everybody rushed to see the dawn. People did not sleep at night. They were obsessed with the idea of seeing the eclipse at dawn. All were thinking of the dawn.
The sky assumed great importance for them. All were on the roads and all were travelling north.
The morning offered strange sights. Everything was very pale. The river, fields with grasses and flowers looked pale. Everybody looked excited. People from far-off places came to see this wonderful scene. When they reached the meeting place, they were cold. They were standing on a rocky place to view the rising of the sun.
At that time, they stood like statues anxious to salute the dawn. The sun was rising now. A cloud also glowed like a white shade. Its rays fell on the trees. It illuminated everything beneath it. The trees, the villages and the lake were bathed in its pale light.
The sun was in its full splendour for a few seconds. It had to race through the clouds. The people had watches in their hands. The sun dashed through the clouds with great difficulty. Its speed was tremendous. It was out and bright for one moment and for the other moment it was lost.
For one second, it emerged and showed itself to the crowd. It was a crescent sun. Finally, it was completely blotted out. It lasted for twenty-four seconds. The sun was being defeated and it lost the race. The shadows of darkness covered the entire area. People expected something more and extra-ordinary. But nothing happened.
However, the sun rose on the other part of the world. It Illuminated the farmhouses, the villages, the railways. Once again the world was connected with the whole fabric of civilization. We conclude
that Virginia Woolf has turned the ordinary to extraordinary in Eclipse.
