Why do people gossip?
Almost everybody. indulges in gossip, which .is “the earliest recreational use of spoken word”, but only a few people appreciate its usefulness and most people consider it scandalous in nature and spirit.
According to the writer, gossip has a purpose and usefulness. Some people become as addict to gossip and feel restless without it. It is called “The unacknowledged poor J relative of civilized conversation”. Some people think that gossip is a little immoral.
They say that it is meant for criticizing and back-biting others. It also causes wastage of time.
Gossip, on the other hand, performs a good analytical function. Its purpose is not to denigrate someone, but to analyse his actions or motives and to arrive at the correct conclusion. Events and situations are also dissected in the same spirit. Francine Prose defends gossip on the grounds that
it Is simply a desire to know about people one likes or is curious about. There is nothing reprehensible about it because the intention is art to insult or degrade them.
